Mac Mac Mac
Why would Mc be pronounced Mic? There’s no vowel there, so why insist on inserting an ‘i’? Why not ‘o’ or ‘u’?
Mc, in Irish and Scottish names, is not a pronounceable combination of letters and was never intended to be. It’s a symbol that means “Mac”, which means “son of”. The confusion comes when the Mc is an unaccented syllable, as in McDonald. It’s hard to say Mac as an unaccented syllable, so it sounds sort of like Mic, when most people say it. But now we’ve reached the point where I’m hearing (young) people Mc as Mic on an *accented* syllable – pronouncing McIntosh as MicIntosh.
Until recently Mc was traditionally written with a double line under the c, indicating that was, in fact, a special symbol. My last name is McAbee and we have always written it that way. And, by the way, it’s pronounced MAC a Bee.
