linux newbie

dont know if i am getting in over my head or not, but i dont really care. i am going to install redhat 7.1 on an alpha box to use as a file server with samba. any suggestions? tips? recommended books? i have NO linux experience, so be ready for lotsa Q's coming from me

I'd reccomend a later version of RH, 7.3 or 8, if you can download them and burn em. If not let me know and I can send em over to you.
Other than that though just be prepared to fight samba tooth and nail. Samba can be a real pain sometimes Feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

Read the docs on samba.org and read the config file carefully, other than that it shouldn't be too hard.
TBH I would use freeBSD on an Alpha but it isn't as easy to configure the kernel if you don't really know what you're doing.

If its just going to be a file server or other type of server, I would recomend ClarkConnect. Because its a small download, you can install just about anything else you need, Small Fast install, Sets up samba and most other servers pretty quickly, and you can start and stop services and other things over a net connection.

well i am looking to use the alpha box CW, and free is always nice too. this is for a business and they recently had an attack on their win2k advanced server that was acting as a file server and domain controller, so they like the idea (want) a linux based file server.
