Win XP 'can't copy file' on installation problem

Hi

Need a bit of help on this one. I have Win XP Home Edition. Whilst surfing - it crashed and I had to switch off and start again.

After trying numerous things, I decided to reinstall. I chose the Quick install method. However, at 95% through installation, i get the message 'can't copy the file'. try again, or exit etc.

These files are osuninst.exe, wlxstamig.inf, xpthtood.gif ntoskml.exe, utkrulpa.exe, halaupi.dll, vga256.dll and vga64k.dll.

Therefore, I get the 'setup cannot set the required window xp configuration, this indicates an Internal Setup Error'.

I've tried a number of format/mbr fix mbr fixboot, fdisk etc, but to no avail.

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

Andy

Did you get the message " Remove and clean CD and retry" ????
Check to see if there is any dirt on the CD and try cleaning your CD rom with a cleaner disc ( about $5-10 ) for a kit.
Clean CD with a damp, clean cotten cloth and wipe from the inside to the outside not in a circle. Good luck

welcome to the boards

pickel's suggestion is what I'd try first

if that doesn't do it, try copying the contents of the cd to the harddrive and run the install off of that

good luck w/ it

Thanks for the suggestions. I've done a thorough cleaning job - no luck as yet.

How do I copy the contents to the harddrive and run the install off that? I'm trying to find the info for this, but no luck as yet.

if memory serves correctly then use a win98 fdisk to partition then dump it in there by doing
c: copy /d: *.* > /c:

where /d: = your cd drive - not so sure on the syntax as I've not had to do it for so long, but I'm sure someone will set me straight

once you've succeeded you just look for the install.exe file and type

install

et voila, you should be on your way

hope it works out

If only I could find the correct syntax. *.* is an invalid switch apparently.

mmm.

Used the same syntax as you gave, but now get:
COPY does not support wildcards or directory copies.

just copy the i386 folder from the cd and then run winnt.exe

best to dump the files to a folder and not the root. type the following commands in order from the dos prompt:

c:
md c:\i386
copy d:\i386 c:\i386 [i'm assuming d: is your cdrom drive letter]
cd \i386
winnt
