Database basics

Ok what I know:

Cold Fusion MX
< I have been using it off and on for about a month now >

CF scripting
< Just Basics >

How to use Ms Access 97
< Do I need a new version? >

What I want to know:

How to use databases with out CF

What software should I invest in?

What scripting languages should I know?

And any thing I didn’t include because I have no clue what I’m doing

Thanks For Your Time…

What goal are you trying to reach?

As in, what are you trying to get out of this project?

Web apps, stand-alone apps, etc...

Regardless I would highly suggest learning SQL as that is the language of the database. Even if you're going to be using a GUI to code the database related things its still a good idea to learn. Access 97 will be "OK" to learn database work.. you may have to relearn a few things when you get to a real database though (drives me insane that access uses double quotes for strings when all other databases use single quotes )

Well my hope is simply knowlage in how to use databases in the way of dynamic webpages.

What database program should I replace access with?

Do you have any suggestions to good SQL tutorials on the web or any books that I should keep an eye out for?

Any thing else I missed?

Thanks for the welcome and your time for the responses...

I'd suggest getting yourself some PHP, MySQL, and Apache if you want to mess with dynamic websites and not pay for software, but still have it be high-quality. =]

You could also learn PERL's interpolation with MySQL.

Good sites to keep in mind... Hmm..Definatly DevShed. PHP's site helps since they have their manual online. =]

There are a lot of good books out there. A good 'beginner to intermediate' book could be "PHP and MYSQL Web Development" by Phillips and Thomson. You should be able to find it online (Or even on places like half.com for pretty cheap). A more advanced DB book could be something like "Transparant Databases"

That's a start, anyway.

Could you provide a few links to downloads of these files?

I read that Dreamweaver MX includes PHP features were would I find them and how would I use them?

A login script.. are you on a domain, or is this a standalone machine only?

download what files specifically?

Ok ignore my previous posts... I downloaded a php pack that has MySQL and APACHE. I set up the software and ran halfway through a Dreamweaver tut for php and ran into a problem I have no database set up and I lack the knowlage of how to go about doing it. I played with the program for a bit MySQL but was un able to figure it out.

So I found what I wanted to download and found out about DW but I need help with database setup now.

CF was alot easier to learn but I think php would be a good thing to know aswell.
