My daughter's HP Pavilion 7915, Win XP Home, is doing the same thing (lsass.exe error loop at bootup) after a nondestructive recovery from the recovery console. Anything new to report? | My 10 year old's PC had the lsass.exe loop... tried various fixes given above, but no luck. In my case, that file must have resided in a specific bad sector of her Seagate hard drive. Seagate tools couldn't repair, so I zero-wrote the drive and ran the Seagate drive integrity check, and landed up reinstalling OS, apps and games. I installed a new, second drive, and Ghost her original drive to this new, backup drive.

HP has a patch to "Fix for Recovery Issue with XP Service Pack 1."
which supposedly affects certain HP and Compaq computers
Download and use SP1RcvryFix.exe found on the following page (the URL is one long string, no spaces): http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/pf-new.cgi...al_201170.html
Follow the instructions exactly and BE VERY PATIENT: At several points there were LONG waits with splash screens or blank screens but all went according to the procedure. I had to follow the the final "If the system does not start up properly....." 4-step routine.
Good luck SP1RcvryFix.exe

Then, I restarted my computer and I got the lsass.exe error when trying to start up. Does anybody have any ideas? I think it may be a hardware issue at this point possibly my HD? It's only 6 months old tho which sucks). Any ideas?

Go back a few posts to find what should henceforth be known as the Frogger 90 Solution. It worked for me. You do need the recovery console to boot from (in my case it was lurking on the disk labelled Operating System CD), and to get past the administrator password (I used blank), and at least how to change directories, copy and delete files from the DOS prompt.
Thanks, Frogger 90 - I'm amazed that any of this occurred to you.

another one...
I have just received this lsass error on my laptop, and unfortunately I do not have any XP CDs to boot from; just the HP recovery CDs that the laptop came with. I also do not have a floppy drive on my laptop, and it is imperative that I get my data Off of the HD on the laptop. I wanna try the Frogger90 solution, but I do not have an XP setup disk. Is it possible to get a CD download somewhere?

I suggest the following:
1. go to my post of 1/23/04 on another computer
2. click on the link,
3. print all the instructions,
4. download the SP1RcvryFix.exe patch,
5. then burn to CD.
Then use the burned CD on your computer.
Follow the printed instructions.
At "Installing the Patch, step 5", maybe you can replace A:\ with the drive letter for your CD to proceed to open the patch file.
If so, continue on.
Good luck.

lsass.exe more input
Have similar problems with lsass.exe even though my problem is intermittent and it came up after updating video drivers for my Nvidia Geforce3 card.
Now my computer sometimes stop the booting process just before the Welcome screen with the lsas.exe popup and something about “operation failed”.
Have tried all kinds of things, including turning of all kinds of services, but that didn’t help.
I can get the computer to consistently reboot correctly if I completely uninstall the drivers for the video card, (and ignore the “found new hardware balloon”)
I’ve seen other posts about lsass.exe problems after updating video drivers.
Strange also that there’s no mention of these problems in the Xp event viewer. The bootlog (which I turned on) does differ in the way that when the boot fails you can see that it does not load the afd.sys driver.
Can anyone see the connection between these files, drivers, hardware etc?
Annoying running 640x400 screen res. after a while….
Regards
Nikler

Thanks for the help, dicran. I managed to get my hands on a Windows CD from my school (they have paid licenses for all of their students), and I continued with the post made by Frogger. I am so happy to have my computer back and running right now. Anyone else having this problem, I would sugest taking a peak at Frogger's solution.

I'm having the same problem it started when I pluged in a USB Mouse. I can't logon to the laptop using my password because it says that the handle is wrong.
This os error is related to the lsass.exe. Please help!!
Before it shutsdown and restarts it says something about error status code 128.
