lsasse.exe

I too have been bitten by lsass.exe and the never ending boot loop, safe mode, last known good configuration, safe mode command prompt...nothing works. I think I must have something hosed in the SAM database. I have loaded XP PRO on seveal PCs and have ran it since CR1 in the beta and this is the first time that I have seen this error. Needless to say I was surprised. A search on Micro$oft's TechNet yielded nothing on the subject, and I was surprised that so many people have the same problem when I did a search from Google. I will boot from CD, use the recovery console to see if I can repair the installation. Thanks for all of you and your input and help on this problem.

Another funky quirk that I have seen with XP is the "out of box experience" and is documented as so on Micro$oft's TechNet and Knowledge base.

There is a utility that claims to let you access ntfs partitions from a command prompt (which most windows XP installs use) here
http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm

Hopefully this will let us copy files off of the affected comptuer and use the e-machines reimage option.

Insert at bootable WinXp CD and choose the system restoration option. At some point the program will exit to the command promt and query what windows installation to boot from. Type the number of your crashed WinXp version. The program will then ask you to type in the adminstrator password. Do that and restart your computer and it should be fixed.

Don't ask me why, but it worked for me.

See...I tried this (I have the same setup, with a partition on my HD with the recovery information) BUT when I hit F10 it doesn't come up with the system recovery screen. It comes up with the advanced startup screen. So I can't even get in to do a system recovery.

By the way I'm having the same lass.exe error as all of you are. I tried F8 and booting with directory services recovery, but that didn't work. I can't boot in safe mode because the error still pops up...Please help!!!

LSASS.EXE and Window XP w/o SP1

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;316134

You Cannot Log On to Windows XP After Running the Out-of-Box Experience
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q316134
SYMPTOMS
You may not be able to log on to your new Windows XP-based computer, or a computer in which Windows XP was installed from an installation source created by your administrator with Sysprep, after you run the Wizard, also called Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), that runs when you first turn on the computer. You may also receive the following error message

System error lsass.exe:
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if your computer is restarted during the Wizard (OOBE). If this occurs, OOBE cannot flush the Machine registry key before the computer is restarted.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322389 How to Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack

To resolve this problem, reinstall Windows XP using the Recovery CD provided by your computer manufacturer or the installation source provided by your administrator, and do not turn off the computer or restart it during the Wizard. If your computer automatically restarts during the Wizard, contact your computer manufacturer or administrator for help to resolve this problem.

I had this error tuesday and found the solution within the last hour!

Follow this link: http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwbo...rum/46198.html

It WILL solve your problem! (at least it solved mine anyway)

Doing this is basically like manually performing a "system restore". I'll keep an eye on this thread and help you all as much as I can. I was just in your situation and know how you feel. I want everyone to get this solved, its annoying!

email me at: webmaster@mephistoscloset.com and I'll help you out.

here how to solve taht annoying lsass.exe problem.

I had the same problem on my desktop, booting Windows XP. On boot, instead of the logon screen, I got a message box from lsass.exe saying, "When trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct." Then the system would restart itself, and re-display the message, over and over.

I was eventually able to recover as follows:

1. I installed a second bootable drive in the PC and booted into it. Then the first (bad) drive (now labeled D was visible under Windows explorer.

2. I copied all files from D:/Windows/repair into D:/Windows/System32/config , just press yes to all when asked if you want to replace files.

3. The drive boots back to normal and i saw no problems with password issues.!!

the only thing is you have to have a fat32 partition. i am not sure if it will work with ntfs.

this is really an easy pain free method though.

good luck all!!

If you want to save yourself the future hassle, you can install the recovery console while the machine is working normally. This is a HUGE help if anything goes wrong.

You will need the XP install disk, open a command prompt and goto the i386 directory in the install source. Once there run "winnt32 /cmdcon" and it will prompt you about installing the recovery console. It will then be one of the startup options when you boot.
