Toyota plans all gas-electric vehicles by 2012
According to this story, that includes trucks, buses and SUVs. Eat my shorts, Detroit!

I would buy one if the price was right. 50mpg is pretty impressive. A far cry from my 20 mpg on a good day.

OK but how much HP are they losing to these hybrids? If they don't have enoght power to pull my boat or camper I'd never get one no matter how many mpg they get. I'm not a big Toyota fan to begin with, although I have owned a Toyota truck in the past.

Great, Toyota's will be even more expensive .
But, glad to see they are going to try that setup on larger cars. The technology is based on locomotives, but the cars are always so small.
I will be interested to see a performance model using that setup. Should be good.

When gas shot up to $1.50 in the US a couple years ago I was really thinking of getting one of these. Everyone was shocked over the gas prices back then. They're back up to $1.50 now and no one seems to give a hoot. Oh well, beats the heck out of the prices in Europe.
By 2012 they may even have fuel cell cars on the road, assuming they can come up with a cost-effective way of generating the fuel.

As long as they are as or more reliable than they are now and if they don't look silly like all electric or hybrid vehicle I've seen, it will be a good move.

Coming from detroit, I honestly think I wouldn't let go of my '68 fastback Fuel eating, gas guzzuling 302 mustang thats sucking down to 11 miles to the gallon when pushing on the gas. (however getting a nice hard accel, which basicly pushed you into the seat). plus those Insights (the hybrid thats about 3 years old) looks like sh!t for one. and two, its like a fricken clown car. i couldn't fit a small child in that car without suffocating them. |

Hey, if you want to guzzle gas and be truly intimidating, you want the Hummer H2. Weighs a ton more than the Ford Explorer, and doesn't even have to report its gas mileage to EPA because it's too heavy to count as a light truck! Of course, it goes for >$50K, but if you want to be a really impressive @$$#01Σ, you're going to have to shell out -- none of this cheap Iacocca crud.

If you read the article, they're planning on hybridizing all their cars, including their larger models.
And if you don't want to get good gas mileage, you can continue buying gallons of gas. I'll look for you sitting on the side of the road

See where i come from i wont be sitting on the side of the road, ill be doing about 175 down I-75 and laughing as the clouds roll in, you run out of gas to power your little electric motor and sputter off the side of the road. the H2 looks like sh!t, and besides i like vehicles that burn the gas. Oh has anyone heard of Woodward dream cruise? thats a true gas burning fest!
