2 CD burners bad?? Help!

I had an old 4x4x8 cd-rw in my sons computer, and it kept giving him "Buffer Underrun" errrors, so after many attempts to fix it failing, I bought him a 10x8x32 Acer from a friend who upgraded to a 40x. He had been using this burner until the upgrade without problems.
So I put it in, and press burn, and get a "Wrong Writestate" error. What is that, and can I fix it?It did place an image of all the CD tracks on the disk, but only 1 song will play. I tried it at 4x just to see, and no go.I tried to do a data disk @4x as well no go.
The old burner doesn't work in my other computer either so I guess it is truely bad, unless these old computers just won't burn a CD.
My sons has burned CDs before,so I know it will.

Did I just get another bad burner??

Specs
Amptron 9800c
K6/2 450 @ 416MHZ (k6/2 not supported by this board, but been running fine for several months)
128 mb SDRAM
Creative 3d Banshee 16 mb
2.6 WD HDD
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have tried the old burner in my old computer, which is exactly the same as above but with a 8400c MOBO.
The old burner always gave a "buffer Underrun" error, but in my old machine it says "SCSI/IDE Error"

Anyone have a clue about this POS?

Thanx
BC

Have you tried killing all other applications via task mangler, er, task manager?
Have you tried burning under a different OS?
Lemme splain that one: at work, I can only burn under 'Knoppix 3.1 Live Linux on CD', same hardware under W98SE gets 30% success rate, and better success right after a fresh reboot (wow, maybe 50% after fresh reboot); the ASPI layers on that PC match and are only 3 weeks old.
Didja flash the firmware in the CDRWs?

Buffer underrun? Definately a case where too many applications are open and there is not enough ram IMO.

OK Update, I got the old 4x to work in my old computer. Did a small data burn on the new 10x, but wouldn't do a whole audio CD,don't remember exactly, but was something like "Couldn't perform endtrack"??

I enabled DMA,updated drivers, changed IDE cables, imcreased Buffer size from 20mb to 50.Also when it did burn it was @ 4x on a rewriteable, wouldn't do 10x on CD-R.The other two burners have no problem with this media, could it just be the burner not liking it?? It's Imation 16x BTW.

Using Nero 5.5.5.something.

Thanx

Almost there, I can feel it

well heres an idea i used to get my 10x to burn at 10x. in task manager open the proccess window go to nero.exe and set the priority to real time. i was able to burn at 10x with UD running in the background (i don't have burn proof) and keep my network connections alive. it had been giving me greif eariler in the week and i could only burn at 4x-6x and get it to finish. even before that i could only burn at 8x. but now i get the full 10x wooo hoooo

cool BobOmega, I'll give it a go in a while

I guess I should add it is Second master, and the HDD is primary, nothing else connected IDE wise

I tried the realtime deal Bob, no luck. Burns about 11%, then falls off to nothing. Says Invalid Block Address??

At least it's different

hmmm.... well i have no idea what that error means. maybe you could try a diff. cd burner program. ummm i can't recomend one beacuse nero is all i have used since i got sick of HP's crap that it installed to use the software they give you.

hmm just re-read some earlier posts and i think the endtrack one might have been ok if you tried it again. that one i know happened to me. something was trying to pop-up and i was getting something or other busy switch to or retry and it casued the end track error.

what windows you runnin'? for the sake of quickness i'll guess 2k or xp. what if you try making a new account and loging in with that one so there won't be anything (at least i think) running and you can see if it will burn any better like that.

my only real guess (i'm rambelling again) is that some thing is taking some cycles away when it shouldn't be and its causing an error. (well i lied 2 guesses) if nothing else why not try uninstalling Nero and installing it again ot getting a new(er) or different version and installing it and give it a go. can't hurt anything ( i would hope anyway)

(any bad (for me even) spelling is due to me switching over to my laptop (i have to use it sometimes or it gets lonely) and i have a had time typing on it in the dark(or semi-dark as it be))
