For those with A GeForce 4 Go 440, come in here
This is really getting to me. Since this is the frist Mobile Computing forum, i need to ask
I've ran 3dmark on my new Dell Inspiron 8200 and copared my score with the others on the ORB, my score is only 54XX and the others with a similar spec are getting a much higher score then me, some an extra 1000 points.
Why, whats wrong with my Dell. BTW i've got the D-froce drivers and tweaked it. What am i missing?

First off Schizophonic, what are the specs on your system? I run a Toshiba P4 1.7 with GeForce440 Go and get around 5300 in 3DMark2001SE with tweaked drivers. I run a fan on the back of my system so the temp while doing this test wont get above 35C. It's also possible to tweak the mipmap settings. Doing so will give you a slight increase in performance but a hit in quality. There are other tweaks that will help slightly, but if other people with your same config are getting such better scores, tweaking may not be the reason.
Did you check in the online result browser of ManOnion to see if your drivers and the drivers of the people you were comparing to are the exact same???? You could just have a bad system. Not all are the same. I have talked to a guy with my exact config and we have the exact same system tweaks and he still is 250 points off my score in 3DMark.
Not many are aware of this little fact, but there are two different types of GeForce440 Gos. One is discrete packaging and the other is not. One is definately faster. I have the non-discreet package with 32mb. The 32mbs are stored off the chip itself and the package design actually makes my chipset faster than an exact system like mine with the 64mb version.
Hope this helps.

Well this is my spec:
P4 1.9Ghz
256 DDR Ram
Geforce 4 Go 440 32mb, and sometimes on the orb, i've seen other people with a much lower CPU for instance (P4 1.6Ghz) hit musch higher score than me.
I suppose tweaking mite not help at all, but could it come down to the bios settings> I dunno. All i know for the geforce 4 go, there are the D-force Dets that will help. So i doubt that the 'Dell' drivers won't quite work.

Well, Firstly they are overclocked. And also, if you look at the highest ones you will find they are all the 64mb versions, so that statement cannot be entirely true.

Nightshade: yes they are overclocked but the 32mb version of the GeForce440 Go is actually faster than the 64mb version of the same chipset. It has to do with how the memory is handled.
Schizophonic: Try using the new version of the Det drivers. You should get a gain in performance over the previous ones (at least 5%). There are a number of tweaks out there for laptops. Try doing a search at Guru3d.com, HardOCP and other comparable sites. I just tested my system again, this time with the laptop chilled and got almost 6000 points on 3DMark2001se. I can only assume that the people on MadOnion use a similiar method, as getting high scores like what they have probably come from extreme tweaking and cooling. Good luck

I know (32mb is onboard, 64 is off), BUT as I said, look at the top scores on MO and they are all the 64mb version, that must say something.
Also, you cant use normal Dets, you have to use D-Forces, they have the 40.41's up at their site now.

Yes NightShade, the D-Force are good drivers, but the new Dets that just came out address the fillrate issue that D-Force drivers seem to be great at. Det drivers are close, close behind now. I barely see a difference between the new drivers and the D-Force ones.
And the top few 3dMark2001SE scores coming from 64mb versions doesnt mean much if anything. There are a couple of systems there in the 5700+ range with 32mbs. The 32mb version is superior to the 64mb in tests like 3DMark2001SE. It's probably more the case that most people actually testing their system and posting on MadOnion probably have the 64mb versions of the GeForce440 Go. That doesnt mean that particular version is superior. Do some research on the difference between the two versions and you will understand what I mean.

I KNOW the 32mb version is faster, I just wondered why all the top ones were the 64mb version.
You mean the actuall nVidia Detonators?? they actually support the Go chipsets now??

It doesnt say they are supposed to work with the GeForce440 Go, but they....and BOY DO THEY!!! Det version 40.72. I got an additional 350 points added to my 3DMark2001SE scores when I installed the new Dets. That's over 7% increase. Im going to install the D-Force drivers again and see which ones give me a better score.

I emailed all those laptop owners who have over 6000 for 3DMark2001SE scores and not a one has responded. I wanted to know exactly what they did to their system to get such good results. Maybe they dont speak english??? |
