OK I know what caused it but why?

Ita a long story but quickly several people had worked on my friends pc and it got to the point it wouldnt even boot. After many hours I finally got the hd/floppy/cd rom/zip hooked up right and the master/slave set right and the bios straightened out. XP was corrupted so bad I did a zero fill and reload.

everthing worked but the modem.

tried 98se same thing....no modem

tried 2k pro same thing

finally it dawned on me to move the modem from the 4th pci slot to the first.

success..... so I thought

5-10 minutes on the net and the mouse and keyboard would freeze up so bad nothing but a hard boot would work.

I removed an isa card that had a small ribbon cable that plugged into a second card that was piggy-backed onto the video card.
I presume this was a cable modem? Anyway the freeze up problem went away and this post is being made by the computer in question.

Now I just want to know why this ISA card which was hooked to the video card would cause the keyboard and mouse to lock up complety after getting on the net. As long as you stayed off the net no problems.

Same thought I had when the modem worked after being moved.

Does the BIOS have the PnP OS option set to 'yes' or 'no'?

And does the BIOS have any IRQ's reserved/assigned manually?

Good luck on the repair.

Is it an ISA modem?.... if so, it may not be plug and play. If it is a legacy card (not plug and play) then its resources will have to be excluded in the BIOS so that Plug and Play doesn't attempt to use its resources.

What's the model/make of the modem? ..if there's no indication then what's written on the largest chip on the modem?
