IPcop networking

I downloaded the ipcop iso 1.1 and installed it on compaq deskpro 2000.

The computer has two nics, both are 3com 509c.

The network was installed as green+red with green having static ip of 192.168.1.1 and red obtaining one from PPPoE connection.

I then connected the deskpro to a laptop machine with w2k and assigned it an ip of 192.168.1.2.
Both have subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

I can't ping the green interface from the w2k machine. It says request timed out. I can't ping the laptop from the ipcop machine. It says 'Destination network unreachable'.
I can ping the loopback adapter and the ip of the ipcop machine from itself though.

I tried that with multiple configurations; with 169.254.x.y addressing and 255.255.0.0 subnet mask to no avail.

Also, the dhcp server provided with the ipcop doesn't give out ip's.
I had it set to give out ip's of 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.254 but it doesn't lease them to the laptop. I used a cross patched cable.
The w2k senses the line though as w2k automatic private ip addressing receives 169.254.x.y address.

What have I done wrong?

Might have your NICS mixed up.
I did this with 2 identical Netintelligent NICS. Couldn't work out for the life of me what was wrong. Swapped the cables and hey presto!

Also, I found compuq deskpros to have some weird setup for NIC's (mine is on board so may be diff). What does ifconfig give you on the IPCop box? Should give you 2 NIC's and LO.

Hope you get it - mine worked first time once I got the cables right!

Cheers
Mick

I tried swapping the cable from one to other.

This is old deskpro. Some PI processor and 64mb simm memory. Nothing is onboard. The nics are isa.

It only gives eth0 (I believe that to be green) since there is no connection on eth1 (red). I'm trying to configure the box at office, not at home where the PPPoE connection is.
Also, it reports one ipsec adapter.

Exactly what does ifconfig give, then?

If you have 2 ISA NICs the same, did you config them in accordance with the install guide? I seem to recall you need to manually enter parameters for both cards which meet the hardware sttings. Dunno how the 3com cards set the IRQ's - is there a jumper?.

If eth1 is setup right it will list it in ifconfig regardless of connection (it's the DEVICE it should list the IP shouldn't matter) Otherwise maybe config problem.

Just found this in Smoothwall install guide - think its the same for IPCop
Quote:
If the donor PC contains more than one card of the same type of card then the all the cards should be defined at the same time using comma separated values.

eg ne io=0x300,0x320 irq=10.15
That's how it is written

Did you do this? If not run setup again from command line and do it.

Cheers

Memory jog. I recall seeing something about 3com NICs in the mailing list.

Try reading through the thread which start here;: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=ipco...2333931417&w=2

The box seems to initialize only eth0 on bootup.

ifconfig -a returns both eth adapters but not mere ifconfig.

How can I run setup from command line?

I know I get to some kind of setup by logging in with the setup account but it doesn't allow me to manually adjust the hardware settings of the adapters.
They're both 0x300, irq10 now.

I must be lame or something

Running the setup program from your link requires cc compiler. But the compiler isn't included, if I want the compiler I would have to download a rpm package but ipcop doesn't have rpm either

What, oh what, can I do?

Dunno what you mean, needs CC compiler? I can run setup from CLI on my IPCop box. Just login as root or admin, and type setup and hit return.

You should need no compliers or RPM installers. You may need to find a DOS utility to change an IRQ on your NIC, or even use a floppy based Linux or a CD linux to use a linux tool (see the mailing list link I put up).

Cheers
Mick

edit: sorry I was so long in answering, I had a visitor.

Ok, it enters the same setup as when logging in with setup account.

Crap. That sounds very hard.. I might just dish this lame deskpro and get a case for my duron700, install w2k server on it and live happily.

Am I making it too hard or is it really so hard...

I had succesful install of debian with networking few years ago... But I guess things have changed and I've forgotten alot of things.
