Gentoo Linux

Well here I sit, not quite knowing what I'v gotten myself into.

It is bootstrapping itself right now. (gonna take about an hour)
Too late to turn back. Lets just hope this bad boy feels like supporting my voodoo 5

Anyone had any experience with Gentoo?

Jkrohn

posting from gentoo 1.4 beta now

not ready to go with rc1 because this is a p2 400 so it goes a little slow with the configuration

emerge - the easiest installation of nvidia in linux I've seen (only grief with suse 8.0)

you can search the portage tree with
emerge -s fluxbox (for example)
and that will show you what versions are there

emerge -p fluxbox will show you what you're about to put on your system

get to know the "USE" flags system and you'll really be able to optimize it

I think you'll get more out of gentoo than I have as I'm still a real n00b, but for me, this has been the fastest linux system I've installed

enjoy

just saw your concerns about the voodoo 5

forget the nvidia thing then (though I am still impressed)

here's a link to search results on their forums - pretty helpful people - can get the RTFM sometimes, but mostly nice, friendly and quick responses

let us know how you get on - I expect you to come flying by me on the gentoo learning curve and would be more than happy to suck up the fumes when it happens

Yeah, I use Gentoo Nice distro

I think I know everything unique about it now... It's really quite simple

There is emerge for installing stuff and rc-update for adding and removing stuff from runlevels....

Most stuff is preconfigured for you, eg. kde works as soon as emerge kde finishes....umm, emerge apache, put docs in /home/httpd/htdocs, start apache, works! I think it's nice

Gentoo has the best installer as well!!! well I like it

A couple of other things...

If a user needs to able to su then they must be part of the wheel group. If a user wants sound, they must be part of the audio group. There's a few groups like this....

I'd recommend reiserfs (or xfs...havent tried it though), it is soooo much faster than ext3... Luckily the gentoo installer supports reiserfs

Lastly, devfs is cool

Hey Kram

what release are you running?

I upgraded from ext3 to reiserfs when I started from scratch with the 1.4 beta

jkrohn - what stage are you going from and what are your specs?

we might be able to give you some time estimates
