Well i started last night

Did the initial rsync and build in about an hour and ahalf i'd say.

Then emeger system overnight, but the darn thing failed so i had to do it again this morning.

Then emerge lilo
setup lilo.conf and here I am

Currently grabbing X, KDE, Fluxbox and Gnome which is taking hella long
Hopefully I be up and running 100% by tonight.

Athlon T-bird 1.33
256 MB DDR

Dunno it's STILL compiling all those

What I've seen I like. It installed very, very minimal, which I like.

Now i get to customize to my hearts content

One thing that I am liking a lot is the package system. Seems to do a very good job of finding/auto installing dependencies.

As far as speed, Dunno yet Been in CLI the whole time compiling things

How much harder is Gentoo than Slackware to setup? I like Slackware better than ANYTHING I've ever used but I've heard that Gentoo is really fast... If I can scrape up the dough for another box I might try it.

jkrohn - once it's done even gui is faster for me

scott tiger - why use a new box? I have gentoo and suse share 26Gb (1 13Gb drive each)

IMO slack was harder, debian the hardest so far - gentoo easier to set up, but requires careful reading of the ubiquitous FManual

nonetheless, gentoo would be a hard first taste of linux, so redhat and mandrake still have a place in the linux pantheon

Hehe, no idea if you do the stage 3 ISO, but if you do stage one be prepared for it to take at least 4 hours to do the initial (minimal) install and then add compiling time for every program you want there after

(by minimal I mean CLI only and basic system utils)

Gentoo basicly does what Linux From Scratch does, just slightly more automated.
(ie instead of manually building bash, bin-utils, then glibc, then rebuilding them all manually it is scripted to do it, but it takes the same amount of time)

This is from stage 1 though.
Stage 3 takes about 20 minutes to install, but leaves you with a minimal install again i believe.

Think I'm gonna have to go try Gentoo.......... have a spare hard drive in a drive tray...... and it is easy to swap drives... so I think I'll go give it a whirl now.............. gonna go do some reading
