Compiling the kernel as we speak They really should have put a disclaimer on this thing "Will take 50 hours to install"

well good morning then (weekends have parameters but everything in between is going to be fluid - when I can say that in 7 words, it'll be my motto )

on my p2-400 it takes about 3 days to get th whole thing as I "nearly" like it - nearly because I need to learn more about linux

what hardware do you have?

what stage did you use?

what part of install are you at now?

(ignore the last question... - I have an emerge system going on right now and it slows the system down - mine too )

I have had 4 failed attempts at installing Gentoo.

would you like any help?

tell us what you're running and we'll try and find the best way to start

gentoo offers

- run off the cd
- iso
- make from scratch (stage1)
- not far off the above (stage 2)
- add your own tonic (stage 3)

I think that if you have played with linux before, stage 3 is a good start

if you are uber 133t and swim with the penguins before breakfast then go to stage 1 (definitely not me )

the iso is pretty good too

stage 2 ... please remind me kram...

Too bad you are going to pursue your life's goal elsewhere.
You have been warned repeatedly. Maybe if you learned to follow directions you would do better using linux.
I am really sad to have to do this.

fair enough but why so negative?

I agree other os'es will do what people want, but why proactively be negative about one over others?

I prefer win 2k over xp and 98 - I've avoided making derogatory remarks about win me - I've never installed it, used it, nor want to - I've seen it in action on a friend's pc - she likes it; should I tell her to change os? not my place IMO

I liked beos for what it was - very nice graphics on an x86 platform (not in the gaming sense, but then it never got off the ground)

solaris 8 for x86 was (unfortunately) an interesting experiment

as far as linux goes some are better than others IMO, but I wouldn't slate them, in the same way that I wouldn't tell my buddies how to run their digital life



ps if anyone who ever sat down and gave up ever got the urge to say "no, I will do this", then the gentoo forums are pretty good
