There may well be updated sound drivers, but PC Chips' site is cr*p and the links are dead at the moment (they're usually ok in the morning (UK time) I'll try then). Not so sure it's a driver problem however since the very first lockup occurred during installation of the first OS (WinME).

Fair comment Dokeman

i always hate to see people having problems with those motherboards...The sad thing is that most people that buy them, dont know they bought them. They usually thought they got a good deal on a custom built system, but all they really got were problems..

Problem solved (I think). Formatted, clean installed WinME this time. Ignored the automatic driver installation program on the motherboard disc and installed drivers manually. Had a small problem finding the audio driver (Windows couldn't find it using the driver search, but it was there.) Anyway had it working for an hour now - it's locked up twice now, but I think I know what caused that.

Food

I agree with Dokeman about the DFI board. It takes little or no skill to set that one up. Actually it fits him. He about stroked out when his source of BX boards dried up. (No drivers to load)...

Well I'm building my second system based on this mobo and have run into similar, but worse, problems. PC locks up during file copying when trying to install XP Pro. Just got through the installation stage now having disabled evrything on the motherboard and set the CPU speed to 1050MHz. We'll see how it manages when I start enabling stuff. Dokeman and MrC I am a convert (at least away from PC Chips). Unfortunately I don't have an account with any of DFI's UK distis. I might give Jetway a go.

Good Luck to you GD. Having to do through stuff like that will drive you nuts. I will say in Dokeman's defense that I have a DFI AK76-sn and it's been rock solid. I've never o'ced it and from what I've heard it's miserable at that but it is really stable.

Apparently they're not terrific performers compared to the other brands but they are really cheap. I this board for $80 shipped not long after they where introduced and it's been running Windows 2000, 98 and many versions of Linux ever since.

GiganticDays, whomever they are from, Athlon boards in general and those with integrated graphics in particular want RAM that is absolutely, 100 percent, OK. Given the struggle DRAM makers are currently in, guess what went down the drain first in their cost cutting ... yes right, QA.

Out of every three DIMMs I buy, at least one is bad. www.memtest86.com is your friend. I even doubted the mainboard once (yes it was a PC-Chips), but with the fourth DIMM it actually worked fine then (and still does). This is not going to become any better when you use DFI instead ...

regards, Peter

Peter, it seems I owe PC Chips an apology. I replaced the RAM with a stick of Crucial and it seems to be working now. Having said that; the problems I had yesterday with the first board weren't solved by using the Crucial RAM. Thanks for your advice though.
