I have been tring to instal mandrake 8.2 off of an iso that I got and everytime I end up with error tring to do the format part. The errors read "mounting partition/dev/hda1 in directory/mnt/home failed(invalid arument). So what am I doing wrong ? I've tried with it formated in fat then run drake instal, tried after fdisking the drive and about every way I can think of and always end up with this error

Hi,

Are you formatting the partitions with a linux file system like ext2 or ext3? How are you setting out your partitions?

Regards

eddy

Mandrake has posted some good demos (HERE) on how to run thru their installation. You might want to take a look. There are some very good instructions on partitioning for multi boot, resizing windows patitions, etc.

Is this a bare hard drive or does it already have an OS on it? Are you trying to install Linux in a Windows partition?

OK first off this is a clean drive I tried using the partition program on the install using the ext3 I believe. There is no windows on this drive. And on my slow dail up I can't download big files so I have pshawn burn me the iso.

Why are you trying to partition with FDISK and format in FAT?

Linux needs to make it's own partition and do its own formatting because it uses a different file system.

Mike

EDIT: if you are making a windows partition with FDISK, they're might not be any room for Linux?

When you get to the partitioning and formatting section of the install, the windows partition is shown in the graphic as BLUE and unused space as WHITE. You must have some unused space on your drive to install Lunux. If you have the whole drive set up with a Windows FAT partition...

Have you tried letting the installer auto-allocate the partitions? That's a good place to start til you get a good feel for Linux.

Germ yes I have. I used the delete(I think it was clear or somthing) and clicked the auto-allocate and it showed the linux partitions and went to write to disk and then I get the error

Xeroid the fat was on it already before I went to install so I used the clear all partitions and auto-allocate it had a "/" partition, "swap" partition, and a "ext3" partion and that is it.

Try doing the install as ext2 and then after the installation convert to ext3.

As root use the command /sbin/tune2fs -j /dev/hda1. Substitute hda1 for what ever partition you are converting, hda2 or hdb1, etc.

Change the partition type from ext2 to ext3 in /etc/fstab.

You'll have to use and initrd image to boot, so if you don't already, you'll need to run the mkinitrd app and then edit lilo to load the ram disk image.
