Massively Parallel Computer
A "Maspar MP 2204 Massively Parallel Computer" is being sold on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2044701051
It is interesting if old, but, I cant find any software nor comparisons for it and I cant tell if it would be a worthwhile project for myself. For a computer with 4,096 processors It might be fast enough IF I can find a way to make it work.
Can give me some advice/help finding the right software to run on it?
When I did a google search all I found were EDU. references to dept. servers and Advertisements(publicity sheets).
TIA!
Vern

| here is some info.
alot of the info I find is from the University of CA . I think your biggest problem would be programing this thing to run. I believe it operates in the same form as the older Crays but not sure, I have seen a Sun system simular to what you are showing. What is the intended purpose of this system ?

I wonder how ECCP would run on that thing (assuming it could somehow)...

As of October 6, 1992, it had a list price of $530,000 USD.

They are RISC CPU's

The MasPar system is programmed in either MPL, a parallel extension to ANSI C, or MasPar Fortran, an implementation of Fortran 90, a standard defined by the ANSI/ISO committees as an extension of Fortran 77 for parallel processing.

file system at up to 200 MBytes/sec.
| I hope you don't plan on just plugging this thing into 110 VAC. It probably requires 440 or higher and filtered/conditioned power. The pics on EBay don't do it justice either. It's prolly about 2-3 feet on a side and 6-7 feet tall...

The MasPar system has been developed for ease of ownership, operation, and maintainability. The system can be installed in an office environment as it is air-cooled and uses standard 220V single phase power. The average measured mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) of all installed machines is 8000 hours; this MTBF includes hardware and operating system failures.

Hi MDS,
I was going to use it for UD cancer(my thoughts any way).
Thanks 'Pup, for the links.
Actually programming it will be my biggest problem I think. I have no idea how to program fortran nor unix.
However the power question also has me troubled - even 220v means I will need to run new wiring.
8K hours between OS failures?? WOW compared w/Win thats terrific!

I don't think you would ever get UD to run on a non windoze system like that it would be a heck of a cruncher though.

HeHe, My thought exactly.
But I guess its too much work to go thru(wiring, AC, Learn new programming language, ETC.) to be worth while. ;(
Thanks for the help guys !
