Finance Memory Question's ------->

Just a quick question or two on memory,

Would it be better on a computer Running ...

WinXP
AMD Duron 1.2
2 x 20gig HDD's

(Computer is for Playing lots of games CS..Quake 3..Empire Earth..War Craft 3.., and running Office XP)

Scenerio #1....
to run 1 stick of 128mb pc133

or

to run 2 stick's of 256mb pc100 = 512mb pc100
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenerio #2....
Or if one of the 256mb's is bad then the question is..

to run 1 stick of 128mb pc133

or

to run 1 stick of 256mb pc100?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(not sure if the second stick of 256mb is good or not, will have to test it.) So in both scenerios which one is better?? the 128stick or the 256 stick.. Will I notice the speed loss over the size gain?? anyway those are my question.

Thank you in advance for the reply.

if you have the extra memory, it is always desirable to run a pc with more. more available memory means your operating system & applications won't have to swap data to the hard disk as frequently wich means your system as a whole will be much more responsive.

btw, there is no speed difference beween running 1 piece of 256mb memory compared to 2 pieces of 128mb memory. the latter simply means you will have one less available slot if you decide to add more ram.

128 MB of ram is barely enough nowadays for doing anything.....

If you're ultimatley asking if the difference in speed between PC100 and PC133 is going to be noticeble...no.

I'd run the 256MB@100MHz over the 128MB@133MHz anyday. Hell, I'd run 512MB@66MHz over the 128MB@133MHz. (that's not legal in a lot of states mind you)

I thnk in this case more is better. Double the size loose 33mhz, that's my choice. In fact in most cases you can run 100 with 133, and it will all run @ 100mhz, I believe that's right. I have done it, I ran a 64 pc100 with 128 pc133, worked alright. Worth a try if you have the ram already

If you mix speeds it should run at the lower speed as brainchild said.

Even though you're running at "slower" speeds, it still going to be a lot faster than accessing the HDD. More ram the better.
