I don't know if this a big deal or not. But in my Add/Remove program list. The Icon for QuakeIII is a ATT-Bell Icon, MS Word icon is the Serious Sam Icon. And there's a couple of other strange ones that are like that.
Sounds like a bug
I'd also suggest kickin' the PC with a big boot
If you go into your start menu do the shortcuts have the proper icons?
Maybe your icon associations got toasted somehow

Ugh.. the first time I used the repair icons thing, I ended up having to re-repair my icons everytime I rebooted

My WinME system gets all confused sometimes with which icon goes with which file (and what type of file), so pictures look like zip folders and word documents look like exe files (or whatever). It doesn't affect the files, and it disappears after a reboot. My take would be to ignore it, as it doesn't cause any problems with my computer.
For 95 all the way through 2000, the "big hammer" fix is to delete the "ShellIconCache" file. It's a hidden file, and there's NO extension. Then change your desktop color depth. This will force a rebuild of the icons.
