take a look at your floopy's LED, if its constaly lit up or if it doesn't light up at all, than you mostlikely got the wires in backwards, or the worst case senario its dead.

Personaly I like to boot from the CD, its much faster and alot less problems can apear. Try that it might work well

What OS are you running? I usually just set it to boot from CD, and let the windoes CD format, and partition, the HDD then install windows
You can also boot from CD, choose start computer with CD-ROM support, and have all the commands as with the floppy, but it is a lot faster.
This will not work with win 95 though. Most 98 CD are bootable.

ok it won't boot with my win98 startup disk either....the led light on the floppy drive never comes on...but it's detected in the BIOS....if it was dead would it be detected at all?? gonna check the wiring...

Yeah it could be dead, and still be found in the BIOS, had it happen before.
Can you boot it from the windows 98 CD?
Start it with CD_ROM support
After everything is loaded type fdisk press enter
then you can partition the drive from there.
Restart computer..
install windows
let setup format the drive for you
That's how i always do 98 systems. Most all will boot from the Windows CD

Yeah it can still be defective, and I believe that it will still be detected in BIOS, it just won't read anything if the wire is pluged in wrong.

I am guessing that you already tried the wires so I am gona say get a new floppy, they are pretty cheap ($15 at most) and see what happenes.

check power supply to floppy and reverse the data cable. When you first turn on puter floppy should make a little noise and light should come on for few second's If everything is hooked up right

sound's like the data cable is fine. but it does sound like you need to hook up the power plug.
