How do I stop the privacy popup bubble alerts from appearing when I browse certain websites?
Solution
By default, the privacy alert will appear whenever your privacy settings have blocked a
component of a website. To turn off the Privacy Alert Advisor so that it will not pop up when
you're surfing the Internet:
- Open the ZoneAlarm Pro Control Center.
- Click on PRIVACY > MAIN tab.
- In the COOKIE CONTROL box, click on the CUSTOM button.
- Uncheck the SHOW PRIVACY ADVISOR box.
- Click the APPLY button, then OK.
When the Privacy Advisor is turned on, and alerts you that a web page has been affected by
Privacy settings, the web site will then show up on the Site List tab. The sites listed are dynamic -
they do NOT remain on the list, unless you manually edit an entry. The entry then becomes permanent.

Summary
I keep getting Alert's from ZoneAlarm that indicate that they are from a Private IP address.
Solution
If you see alerts from non-routable IP addresses, this is most likely from a machine on your local
network, or your NAT (hardware) router if you have one. Private IP addresses are non-routable -
this means that they exist only on your local network and cannot normally be routed to or from
the Internet.
The private, or non-routable, IP addresses are as follows (x can be any legitimate IP number):
- 192.168.x.x
- 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x
- 10.x.x.x
When you see these alerts, determine whether it is from a computer on your network, or from the
machine or router that performs NAT or DHCP (most commonly, if the IP address ends in 1 then
it would be the device performing NAT/DHCP).
The most common cause of these alerts is not having the Local Zone set up properly. Be sure that
your local network systems (and router as necessary) are checked in the Local Zone, and that the
Local Zone is set to Medium. Also, you may need to UNcheck the box to block local servers.
Notes
Bear in mind, there is a lot of unwanted traffic on the Internet and certainly not all of it is hacker-related.
Some examples of this:
- Routers leak bogus IP addresses, banner ad servers are equipped with load balancing software,
which causes return pings to be sent to the wrong target,
- If your ISP uses DHCP to renew the IP addresses of its users, your system may be flooded with
traffic that was generated by the previous user of that IP address. This may be seen as (ICMP) or
(DHCP) traffic in the ZoneAlarm alerts log.
- Some routers send Multicast packets. Your computer will accept the ones destined for it, but
ZA/ZAP will block packets not destined for your computer. For more information about
Multicast, see:
http://www.ipmulticast.com/community...rorouting.html
- When you access a web site with ads, the browser automatically sends a request to an ad server.
For example: ads.spammer.com (205.112.143.116:80), sends back a ping looking for the
originator of the request and you get an alert because ZoneAlarm is blocking the ping.
ZA Pro has a feature to suppress alerts - open the Alerts panel, click on the advanced button and
click on the suppress alerts tab. Check any boxes for the type of alerts you do not want to see.
Please note, this will prevent alert logging in the log file.
Zone Labs does not provide investigative research services for alerts. Please do not send us your
logs for review.
Please use caution when reporting potential abusers to ISPs. The Internet is an imperfect science
and we would rather have you enjoy your home computing experience, knowing that your
systems are protected through the use of ZoneAlarm.

Summary
How do I stop the popup alerts?
Solution
ZoneAlarm has no feature to supress alerts.
In ZoneAlarm Pro, if you open the Alerts panel you will see that there is a box to check 'show
pop-up alerts'. This will prevent popups when it is unchecked.
To suppress alerts more completely, click on the Advanced button in the Alerts panel and click on
the suppress alerts tab. Check any boxes for the type of alerts you do not want to see. This will
not prevent alert logging in the log file (if you have the log file enabled).
