Help with Zone Alarm 3.0 Pro

After I got cable connection, I figured that putting a firewall is not a bad idea. So yesterday I bought ZA 3.0 Pro and installed it with all default settings. But, now, my Instant messenger doesn't connect and each time I open any site on my browser, I get a message from the ZA icon sitting on the right side tray -the message flashes and says portions of the site have been blocked.

What gives?

Can anyone please tell me the settings so I can work normally and connect IM.

All I want the firewall to do is prevent any outside access to my PC.

Thanks.

It takes awhile for Zone Alarm to learn.
So be patient.

The Blocked portions are caused by the ad-blocker and can be changed in the : Privacy , Main Area.

I don't use IM so Imay not be much help but check the :Program Control , Programs and see if the privacy(far left)
is on or off.Try off it defaults to on. I have similar problems w/ Netscape 7.

Zone Alarm is good but takes awhile to learn, both for the app. and you. Play with the settings and if it gets messed up just reset to defaults.

I've had it 6mths and still have to tweek it once in awhile.

Funny, mine defaults to leaving privacy and ad-blocking off. I tried enabling it but it messed up some sites so I don't bother with it. If you want to turn off the Privacy Adviser, open the Privacy tab, click on "custom" in the cookie section and untick the privacy adviser (then Apply).

I have no trouble using IM on mine (Trillian and ICQ) with local/trusted and internet security set to full (i.e. stealthed ports) (dunno if being on a LAN would make any difference though I think you set trusted security level to medium on a LAN). The IM app also needs server rights (under Program Control > Programs) as well as internet access. If it's not got server rights (in my experience it should ask for them anyway), you left-click the "?" icon under Server-Internet next to your IM app in the Programs list and select Allow (same for Server-Trusted if it doesn't automatically change to Allow as well). If your IM doesn't work with server rights then I dunno what's wrong (might need to reduce your trusted/local security level - maybe even your internet level - which would make your ports visable, closed but visable so not ideal).

Uh, mine defaulted to on for MSIE6, Netscape 7, and AOL 7. But I turned them off for the same reason, kept having access problems.

How do I stop the privacy popup bubble alerts from appearing when I browse certain websites?

Solution

By default, the privacy alert will appear whenever your privacy settings have blocked a
component of a website. To turn off the Privacy Alert Advisor so that it will not pop up when
you're surfing the Internet:

- Open the ZoneAlarm Pro Control Center.
- Click on PRIVACY > MAIN tab.
- In the COOKIE CONTROL box, click on the CUSTOM button.
- Uncheck the SHOW PRIVACY ADVISOR box.
- Click the APPLY button, then OK.

When the Privacy Advisor is turned on, and alerts you that a web page has been affected by
Privacy settings, the web site will then show up on the Site List tab. The sites listed are dynamic -
they do NOT remain on the list, unless you manually edit an entry. The entry then becomes permanent.

Summary

I keep getting Alert's from ZoneAlarm that indicate that they are from a Private IP address.

Solution

If you see alerts from non-routable IP addresses, this is most likely from a machine on your local
network, or your NAT (hardware) router if you have one. Private IP addresses are non-routable -
this means that they exist only on your local network and cannot normally be routed to or from
the Internet.

The private, or non-routable, IP addresses are as follows (x can be any legitimate IP number):

- 192.168.x.x
- 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x
- 10.x.x.x

When you see these alerts, determine whether it is from a computer on your network, or from the
machine or router that performs NAT or DHCP (most commonly, if the IP address ends in 1 then
it would be the device performing NAT/DHCP).

The most common cause of these alerts is not having the Local Zone set up properly. Be sure that
your local network systems (and router as necessary) are checked in the Local Zone, and that the
Local Zone is set to Medium. Also, you may need to UNcheck the box to block local servers.

Notes

Bear in mind, there is a lot of unwanted traffic on the Internet and certainly not all of it is hacker-related.

Some examples of this:

- Routers leak bogus IP addresses, banner ad servers are equipped with load balancing software,
which causes return pings to be sent to the wrong target,

- If your ISP uses DHCP to renew the IP addresses of its users, your system may be flooded with
traffic that was generated by the previous user of that IP address. This may be seen as (ICMP) or
(DHCP) traffic in the ZoneAlarm alerts log.

- Some routers send Multicast packets. Your computer will accept the ones destined for it, but
ZA/ZAP will block packets not destined for your computer. For more information about
Multicast, see:
http://www.ipmulticast.com/community...rorouting.html

- When you access a web site with ads, the browser automatically sends a request to an ad server.
For example: ads.spammer.com (205.112.143.116:80), sends back a ping looking for the
originator of the request and you get an alert because ZoneAlarm is blocking the ping.

ZA Pro has a feature to suppress alerts - open the Alerts panel, click on the advanced button and
click on the suppress alerts tab. Check any boxes for the type of alerts you do not want to see.
Please note, this will prevent alert logging in the log file.

Zone Labs does not provide investigative research services for alerts. Please do not send us your
logs for review.

Please use caution when reporting potential abusers to ISPs. The Internet is an imperfect science
and we would rather have you enjoy your home computing experience, knowing that your
systems are protected through the use of ZoneAlarm.

Summary

How do I stop the popup alerts?

Solution

ZoneAlarm has no feature to supress alerts.

In ZoneAlarm Pro, if you open the Alerts panel you will see that there is a box to check 'show
pop-up alerts'. This will prevent popups when it is unchecked.

To suppress alerts more completely, click on the Advanced button in the Alerts panel and click on
the suppress alerts tab. Check any boxes for the type of alerts you do not want to see. This will
not prevent alert logging in the log file (if you have the log file enabled).
