What is a .vxd file?

I was upgrading my brothers' old 300mhz system and it boots with 4 missing files. They are all .vxd files and one .dll.
I think these are them;
redir.vxd
dfs.vxd
xxx.vxd ( don't remember exactly what this one was)
msn32.dll?
specs;
CaseEdge w/ 325 w p/s
ECS K7S5A
XP1700+
256 Crucial PC2100
Lite-On 40x12x48 CD-RW
WD 30g 7200 (from old machine)
16mb video card ,PCI( Have the disk, didn';t pay attention to what it was)(from old machine)
32x CD-rom (from old machine)
PCI modem (from old machine)
Sound Blaster 16? sound card (from old machine)
Windows 98

I think I missed some of the mobo VGA files on install but I don't know. I thought it was was his old hard drive so I had a new HDD that I formatted and loaded 98SE and all the drivers for the PCI cards and came up with the exact same missing files and the PCI modem wouldn't install on either HDD. Not enough IRQ's available. I do have 2 other mobo install disks of the K7S5A that I was going to try next. Maybe I have a bad install disk? How do I free up an IRQ for the modem. Help please. I have built 2 machines with this board and no problems at all until this. What am I missing? I have never upgraded with an existing data filled HDD. I've always had a fresh install to work with.

Uninstall dialup networking and reinstall it.. should take care of that problem with allof those files

.vxd are device drivers

vxd = virtual device driver.

These are usually windows system files. It does sound like a mis-installed piece of hardware. Check for updated drivers for all your hardware and install them.

Microsoft network dynamic library link file missing?

Slick Vass. I would've had to be sitting in front of the PC to figure that out.

Ya, that's a good idea. Do a Start>run>SFC>Enter and let it run through.

If your friend is not going to use the parrallel ports or a serial port, you can disable those and free 3 IRQs. You should have enbough IRQs tho.

What make/model is your modem?

Why do you need 2 burners and a CD drive?

There is only 1 CD-RW and a CD-rom. I tried to talk him into a DVD-rom as a second drive. Thanks for all the help! I am going to work on this tomorrow so stand-by for more q's. He will use the parallel port for his printer but not the serial.
It is a 3com PCI modem, exact model I don't know right now but will when I work on it 2morrow.
