I have the DLink 704 hooked up to my cable modem, running 4 pcs hooked up to it. It works fine. No problems, easy to set up.

I run a 2WIRE Home Portal 100 and I LOVE it!
I got it at Office Depot for $150.00. Great investment on my part.

I was reading this thread and wondering... cant you just use 2 nics in the "server" pc and do ICS to a switch/hub?

My cheap home setup......

Code:
My system........

                             DSL LINE
                                    |
                                P100 running ICS
                                          |
                                    16 PORT 3com hub
                                       | | | |
                                 Laptop P450 P400 P200
My P100 runs windows 98SE ...... and thats all it does ICS...and dhcs ----------------my dsl doesn't play well with linux without an expensive router....... and I had the IBM P100...... so I put the DSL card in and installed a 10 mbs ethernet card and ran that to the hub.

My 16port hub was $20 off ebay...and the 10 mbps ethernet cards.........(all the stuff was 3com) only cost about $2 each. For my home system 10 mbps is more than fast enough..... besides the price was right Still have plenty of ports for expansion. All my computers have fast dsl and all run zone alarm (windows systems anyway). My personal system runs Linux.

Uplink port is a port on a hub or switch wired "straight through" that allows you to cascade hubs/switches.

Alright, thanks for all the info guys, i think my 2 choices for a Router will either be a LINKSYS BEFSR41 or a D-Link DI-704.
