32X CDROM works only w/one CD ... wierd ...

1.1GHz Duron
K7S5A 4/29/02 BIOS
256MB Crucial PC2100
W2K Pro

I have a LEOPTICS CD-ROM (CDD-1320) older 32X
I've used canned air and a CD-ROM cleaner (8 little brushes type), and checked out Device Manager (says it's working properly).

For some strange reason, the CD-ROM only recognizes one CD, one that was burned on a different box.
It will not recognize any other CD's (such as installation CD's, mainboard CD, other purchased CD's)
These other CD's all work if I put in a different CD-ROM.

Is there some type of Read/Write setting that would have an effect? I just don't understand why it will always read just that one CD.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Strange - usually it's the other way around (will read manufactured CDs, but not home burned).

Do you have another drive to try in it's place?

I have seen it before though and it's usually been that the drive is dying. Either something is preventing some CD's from spinning or the lens is damaged in some way. If you want to take the time, take apart the CD drive (it's pretty easy) and clean the moving parts.

Just take the time to remember how it came apart! It makes it easier to put it back together.

Hi bwcc,

I do have another drive to exchange, and the other works fine.
I've never taken one apart before, but will take it apart to check it out.

Thanks,

Update ...

Well, I took it apart, cleaned the lens with alcohol on a Q-tip, put it back together and it works perfectly now.
Too cool, it's a faster CD-ROM than the other one I had and I'm really glad to have it back. I figured it was driver problems or configuration and I was getting frustrated in trying to get it to work. Glad it was such an easy fix.

Thanks for encouraging me to take it apart, I do appreciate it!

Happy ending,
