WinXP /DVDrom issue
I'm currently experiencing some problems with my new pioneer dvd-rom 16X. when I installed it and booted it up, it got detected and all but it seems to be having problems with cd's. So I was checkin out the problem and it only has 3 driver files, while they normally have 4... which I checked on friends machine who both have the same drive. I even installed their drive and the same thing occured, missing that one file. IMAPI.sys Is there a way I can get that driver included.. it seems to me like a win xp error, would a full reinstall work too?
well the thing is it recognized my friends perfectly fine a while back, once I put it in, it seemed alright, but I uninstalled it and now I've notice the 1 driver file missing. It still seems to run partially (I can play dvd's go figure) but when I try to explore the disk, I get an I/O error... the 3 I have are cdrom.sys / redbook.sys/ storprop.dll. I have a ABit KG7 (not raid) and to my knowledge, a standard IDE cable... which has my burner(which works perfectly fine with 4 driver files) and the dvd rom... on the sec. I had another dvdrom till it seemed to have blown.. and now I was making the switch.

Imapi has to do wit the internal CD burning program from win XP
You can get an update here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseID=37763
Don't think that will help IMAPI is not needed, and since it is a DVD-ROM, you only need: cdrom.sys / redbook.sys/ storprop.dll
Same here and works fine.
Have you got Easy CD creator as your burning program by any chance?
BTW welcome at techimo!!

thanks,
I don't have Easy Cd creator, I have Nero. hmm, so it should still work then... what do you think is causing the I/0 error? I noticed that on my work comp, it only has the 3 but both my friends have 4 for the same dvdrom.

Is Nero InCD installed?
Nero 4.x doesn't work under winXP and may cause troubles. If you have 5.x you can upgrade free and unlimited to the latest version ( www.nero.com)
Also go to Windows\System\IOSUBSYS directory and check for the following file: SCSI1HLP.VXD. If aviable, rename it.

Rename it for testing reasons. Don't worry if this file is not in your system directory. But if it is, you should rename it to test if this is causing the error. http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Glos...?RelatedID=656 |

Well I tried all the updates possible and still nothing. I looked for that file but the directory wasn't there. I just did a fresh new install of XP and it gave me nothing. still the same problems... I really don't know what to do with the situation... anymore suggestions would be nice.
thanks everyone who replied

GET BACK YOUR CD/DVD
After installing/uninstalling Roxio (Adaptec) Easy CD Creator v5.0x, v4.0x or older and/or DirectCD v3.0x on/from your Windows 2000/XP system, your CD-ROM/CD-R(W)/DVD-ROM/DVD-R(W) drives may get suddenly lost. The CD/DVD drive icon(s) may disappear from My Computer, Windows Explorer and any other disk/file browsing app. Also, if you try to view/open/run any CD/DVD based folder/file, you may encounter several popup messages linked to one of these error Codes: 19, 31, 32, 39 and/or 41.
But these BUGs can be fixed by hacking your Registry.
You must be logged on with Administrator rights to be allowed to edit the Registry.
Fire up Regedt32 and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Make sure Read only mode is disabled in Options menu.
BACKUP this Registry key BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES:
Highlight it -> click Registry from the File menu -> select Export Registry File... -> browse to your desired location -> type a file name -> click Save.
Now look in the right hand pane for these 2 REG_MULTI_SZ Values: "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters". Right-click on each one, select Delete and click OK.
Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows when done.
The catch is that after doing this you may also lose your CD/DVD recording capabilites in Win2000/XP.
In this case, check the Roxio Support page for software patches/updates/fixes, and install the current ones applying to your particular versions(s).
These Roxio FAQ pages may also provide some help:
Easy CD Creator 5.0x Basic.
Easy CD Creator 5.0x Platinum.
Uninstalling and/or reinstalling the affected Roxio software may also solve this issue.
If none of these methods work, then open Windows Explorer and (double)-click the REG file created when you backed up the Registry key above to restore the original values. Restart Windows when done.

try that and see if that fixes your problem

I even used the drive to install XP... so it works... just not within XP.... I would think more of a software issue than hardware right?
