Cant put CPU Back in!?

I had to take out my P4 on my micro motherboard to make room to install some disks.

Anyway, I cant get it back in. The mb manual shows a small arm lever that I need to lift to put the CHIP back in, and then the huge levers for the Heatsink. But...on the way back in, I can possibly lift the small arm to open the grid for the CPU because the Heatsink blocks everything off.


I've looked for how to remove the Heatsink but it seems glued or stuck on!

Your not suposed to lift the lever after you installed the cpu
just before or it would fall out again

make sure everything is straight and that you dont have anything under the heatsink such as a fan cable etc

How did you get the CPU out without lifting the lever? Maybe I'm being too simplistic, but usually the install procedure is the exact opposite of the removal.

I was working on a P4 system and ran into a situation that reminds me of what he's talking about... It IS possible to pull the heatsink/CPU out without lifting the lever (Personal experience that I don't plan on repeating) but not possible to replace it the same way.. HOWEVER, I was able to very gently pry the heatsink off the CPU and replace the CPU properly then place the heatsink back on with a bit of thermal paste.. Hope that helps.. When I did that I was freaking out thinking that I was gonna have to buy a new CPU for this guy and didn't want to spend the money..

He uninstalled the processor cause it was in the way. Naturally, with the lever in the up position it got in his way as well, so he moved it back down.

Unless of course, he used a crowbar to pry the processor out of the socket. Putting the processor back in would then be the least of his problems, as the motherboard would be damaged beyond use.

What you need to do is lift the arm, put the cpu and heatsink back in. Make sure it is lined up correctly. There should be one corner that isn't square, and has a diagnal cut to it (depending on the processor type), match this up with the corner on the socket. Gently place it into the socket. The weight of the heatsink should cause it to sink in easily and no force will be required to push it all the way in. If you have to use force, you are doing something wrong. Then simply press lever down, securing the processor. THEN you need to secure the heatsink with the provided clips. Do not secure the heatsink with the clips until that lever is in the down position, and the processor is locked in place.

There you go. If that doesn't do the trick, then you may have done something wrong when you took it out, which are what the above people are assuming. Remember what making an assumption does, right?

Also there is no way, I can lift the small brown lever up for placing the CPU back in; as I explained the attached heatsink will press it down before the CPU reaches the bed.

The only way I can think of, is to take off the heatink.

I have done multiple searches on google, but they all seem to be of types with clips holding on the Heatsink to the CPU....I can see no clips on mine, the small P4 seems embedded in the heatsink, or at least glued to it.

I am also thinking that maybe the CPU is just broken. I can EASILY get it back in without no force, with the small brown latch down...but the system wont boot.

I was just thinking that perhaps with the small brown lever down, the contacts at the bottom of the CPU would not connect properly in the bed....but this is not the case according to skywalker.

From reading the above posts it seemt that people are confusing the two types of lever. First the tiny plastic lever near the CPU bed, and the two Large Iron levers for locking the whole Heatink/CPU assembly in place (note these locking levers do NOT connect the CPU to the heatsink, they just lock the whole unit in place).

Does anyone have the definitive answer....I am amazed that there seem so many different oppinions on this....for something that should just have one answer :-> no offence intended to anyone who posted, perhaps I was not clear enough the first time....any replies or suggestsions welcome.

I think information is the key here. Can you describe how you removed the CPU step-by-step. That's going to help people in answering your question.

As you can see from the posts above, some people think you may have broken it on removal.

Also, the Socket type and Heatsink type will give people a better picture of your situation.

The only way I can think of, is to take off the heatink.

Yes, remove the heatsink and all your problems will be solved!!!!

That is, unless you damaged the socket beyond repair when you jerked it out of there.

Sounds to me like the socket is now hosed, and a new mobo is probably in order.

Pull brown lever up. Take heatsink off of the cpu. Install cpu with the brown lever up. Push brown lever down after installing cpu. Install heatsink on top of cpu (with thermal paste) use large silver clips to hold heatsink to motherboard. If you pryed the the heatsink and cpu off of the motherboard without lifting brown lever you may have messed it up.
