Yes. I know you said you're getting an AMD, but in case you decide to change your mind, do NOT buy a P4. Just don't . Now that that's out of the way, I suggest the Abit KX7 board. It's fast, it's cheap, it overclocks great, and it's got a cool box . For the XP, make sure that you get a .13 micron 2100+. They're going to start making all the XPs on the .13 micron so that means cheaper prices and slightly better overclocking. As for video cards, don't get a ti4400 or 4600. If they're that huge, the technology isn't keeping up with those cards. the ti4200s are the only normal sized ones. I'd get a Radeon 8500 or an R250 that they're coming out with soon. Maybe even a Matrox Parhelia if you can wait. I dunno, but I don't like the ti4400/4600s. They seem to be taking the same 3Dfx route. For a heatsink, I recommend the Thermalright AX7. It just plain r0xx0rs .

...but don't go for the XP2200+. Although it's the first of the .13 micron chips, it doesn't run significantly cooler, and its overclocking capability is very poor -- about 7%, according to Tom's Hardware. You can stably overclock an XP1900+ to run faster than you can the XP2200+.

What does Toms Hardware know? Everyone knows very well they are Intel biased. Furthermore, look at THIS . That's from Toms Hardware. Does that look like someone who knows how to overclock. It's falling off the sides there, look!

Just saying that anything including "Toms Hardware says" should be disregarded. The tbred hasn't had its chance to be overclocked by someone who knows, except at www.amdmb.com as far as I've seen. If you ask me, that is an awesome overclock for air cooling. Even with AMDMB's result, there wasn't any real hardcore overclocking done with the 2200+.

I never implied that THG was gospel. Actcrazy asked for information and opinions about a new machine involving the kt333 mobo. I did produce some information directly related to his question. I use THG as well as many other sites to form my own opinion and that why his Q was asked here. I myself run only AMD in all of my machines. Produce information for someone to form an opinion instead of crapping.
BTW, welcome to TechIMO DJ-Quack and actcrazy. |

Oh, does "everybody" know that THG is Intel-biased? Leaves me out. If you mean that it stressed that very few Athlon mobos take advantage of the on-chip thermal diode to protect the CPU, well, that's just a regrettable fact. Me, I bought my K7266A on their recommendation. I figure my HSF's not going to fall off unless I ship my case via USPS.

For what it's worth, SharkyExtreme (a strong AMD backer) also tested the XP2200+ and came to the same general conclusion as THG: Quote:
On the surface, the 0.13-micron Thoroughbred would seem to have a lot of overclocking potential, but the actual results were a bit disappointing. If you're thinking of buying the Athlon XP 2200+ for overclocking purposes, then stop right where you are. The highest reliable core speed we could get was 1931 MHz using a 143 MHz FSB and a core voltage of 1.775V. You may be looking at the core voltage and wondering why we didn't use 1.8V or higher, and that would illustrate the main problem we had when overclocking.
All overclocking exercises are a give and take between core speed, voltage and overall heat levels and stability. The Athlon XP Thoroughbred took this to a whole new plane, as even slight voltage increases would ramp up core heat quite noticeably (like you had crossed a line in the sand), while lowering the overall overclock speed. Finding a happy medium is a tedious and extremely long-term process, and even hitting over 1.9 GHz took a whole lot of tweaking. For all testing we used a Vantec copper HSF, a 7000 RPM fan and Arctic Silver 3, and it was still tough going at some points.

Mind you, they liked the CPU and gave it an 8.5/10 rating.
