Food

Welcome to Techimo!

I assume you entered the BIOS setup to "disable" the onboard video...Please also check for any setting that chooses PCI over AGP video.

Sometimes simply changing the PCI slot will correct a problem like this. I hope it is that simple.

In the BIOS, it only lets you choose between PCI or AGP...it says my primary video is PCI even though it is actually onboard. I have also tried all my PCI slots..no change..grrr..thanx tho

does it lock up in the bios or in windows or when loading windows? does it have i810 graphics?
i had i810 based ibm which i added a voodoo 3 and it locked up when i disabled the vga in bios i had to keep i810 running and the voodoo so it was like dual display and then set the primary video to voodoo and secodary to i810 . it would not work at all if i disabled the onboard video.

I actually called both the emachines tech support and Jatons as well..neither one helped. and I have the 82810 Graphics controller.......how do I set it up to recognize the geforce before I actually insert it? It won't let me install the driver without the card installed, but when I install the card the computer won't boot. grrrrrrrrrrr thanx for you help everyone...I'm sure with your help I will get it fixed

I hate to say this but some machines will not work in this way,I did this on a friends machine and nothing would do the trick. This was back in the tnt days and we ended up putting in a voodoo 2.

ALOHA
Make sure the card seats all the way into the slots.
A good way to make sure the card is going all the way in is to loosen or remove the screws that hold the mounting plate to the card.Try to insert it then and watch to see if the card goes in deeper and or straighter.
I have had to dremel a couple of cards to allow the rear mounting plate to be more adjustable during install.

Aloha

if the machine freezes when you insert the card then it may be faulty? try it in a friends machine, also reset the cmos and then try it.
the bios may not be giving the card a memory address causing a freeze.
Try disabling any other cards or on board devices.
try another stick of memory
and finally the power supply may not be able to supply the geforce with enough power , up plug the cd-rom and hard drive and see if it will boot up with the card.
good luck
