One of the best ways to avoid problems with W98 is NOT to use the Standby feature, I also only use the Hard Drive timer under the Power Management and leave the rest to always on.
If slow boot is a problem, go to start, run and type in
MSCONFIG
Hit OK
Go to the start-up tab and unckeck everything except Scanreg and System Tray.
Go to "System" in Control Panel, performance then under "typical role' click Network Server.
If ya got 128mb of RAM or more, holler back.

When I used Win98, I found that under heavy use and running constantly, the drive had to be wiped, reformatted, and the OS reinstalled about once every 6 months. Perhaps you need to reinstall to clear up your problems.

Do you have the latest version of directX running?
9beta is out, but 8.1 works for sure. there are some patches that you need to get, but once you do, that may solve you problem.
it worked for me!
