You press the keyboard ENTER key to wake up your computer once it has fallen into STANDBY mode. In STANDBY mode, your screen is black, press the keyboard ENTER key, failing which press any other keyboard key. That should work.

Both S1 and S3 are power management options.
Mine is set to S1. With S1, you press the keyboard ENTER key to wake your computer from its sleep.
S3 is a more advanced power management mode. In S3, power to all peripherals is cut except to RAM, I repeat, except to RAM. The mode saves and stores all ON-SCREEN data and working applications to RAM. It's close to HIBERNATE, which works on the setting S4(BIOS).
With S3, you hit the POWER BUTTON to start your system all over again.

Who's on first??????
XP... reread everything slowly from start to finish. Please. I use S3 in Win XP and pushing the power button does indeed wake the system.

I think the confusion arose from the diffferent "power" modes. Basically, there are 4 "power" states -
S1 - Standby mode
S2 - I forget what this mode is
S3 - Suspend-to-Ram mode - S3(STR)
S4 - Hibernate mode
With S3, all data, etc. is suspended to ram and kept there. With S4, all data, etc., is kept in ram and copied to hard disk and saved in a file when you power down the machine. The file has different flavors of extensions - .bin,
.dat, .sys.
With S3, you "push the power" to wake up the system. With S1, you press the ENTER key to do so.
XP1.8k has to make a choice - S1 or S3. S1 you press the ENTER key; S3 you hit the power button to get back to your system.

Michael Chiew | okay, good u clarified taht......now, with s3, when i press the power button, nothing happens......no response....just power is back to the computer.....then, when i press restart, it gives me a beep that lasts a second, and nothing happens again.....now, when i press restart, my computer has to boot ALL THE WAY FROM THE BEGINNING......no any problems?

I'm not sure I understand your description of the minor problem.
For myself, when I switch on the computer and switch it off within a matter of seconds, the powering down happens only after 15 seconds. So there is a "wait" state of 15 seconds before all the lights go out. That's the scenario for me.
Generally, when I switch on the machine and want to switch it off, I would do a "proper" shutdown. That is, I go to START|SHUTDOWN. When the SHUTDOWN box comes out, I click OK to do a "proper" shutdown. There are good reasons for doing this. The "proper" shutdown prepares the machine for powering down. It closes any application, dlls, etc., that may be hanging around and ensures that your hard disk shuts down safely.
