The first one (SETUP_/p_J) is the right one. No, you won't lose your files.
Muno, you're absolutely right. I don't use the feature myself. In fact, STANDBY, or HIBERNATE, or any other derivative of power management, doesn't really bother me.
The subject itself is pretty interesting. It all started with the concept of SIPC (Simply Interactive Personal Computer) which laid the foundation for Microsoft's ONNOW Initiative, and which led to ACPI and APM. Reading the stuff clears the air about power management issues for the computer (portable and desktop). Quite good reading material, really.

Try the space bar... Look in your bios, it will probably have some sort of option for a "hot key" to wake the system up. I have mine set to wake on any keypress.

When your computer is on STANDBY, press ENTER key to get back to normal operating mode. You don't need to press the power button.
Make sure the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP settings in the BIOS are correct. My settings are as follows:-
ACPI Function - ENABLED
Power Management - Press ENTER
ACPI Suspend Type - S1(POS)
PM Control by APM - YES
Video Off Option - Suspend -> Off
Video Off Method - V/H SYNC-Blank
MODEM Use IRQ - 3
Soft-OFF by PWRBIN - INSTANT-OFF
State After Power Failure - OFF
Wake Up Events - Press ENTER
Once the correct settings are laid in the BIOS, getting out of STANDBY mode is just a matter of pressing the ENTER key.

I think there's been a misunderstanding somewhere.
To select an item from CMOS SETUP UTILITY, you press the keyboard ARROW keys. To change a particular setting, you use the keyboard PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN key. To exit a setting, or to get back to the CMOS SETUP UTILITY menu, you press the keyboard ESC key. So to exit s3, you press the keyboard ESC key.
When you press ENTER from WAKE UP EVENTS, you enter an expanded list of several settings such as -
VGA - OFF
LPT & COM - LPT/COM
HDD & FDD - ON
PCI MASTER - OFF
POWERON by keyboard - ENABLED
POWERON/Resume by PCI CARD - DISABLED
POWERON/Resume by LAND/Ring - DISABLED
POWERON/Resume by RTCAlarm - DISABLED
PRIMARY INTR - ON
IRQS Activating Monitoring - PRESS ENTER
To leave these settings, press the keyboard ESC key.
STANDBY will take place after your computer has been idled for the duration of minutes specified in your POWER MANAGEMENT
PROPERTIES box. Mine is set to 20 minutes.
To get into POWER MANAGEMENT, double click MY COMPUTER icon on your desktop. Double click CONTROL PANEL. Double click POWER MANAGEMENT icon. The POWER MANAGEMENT PROPERTIES box appears.
There are 2 taps - POWER SCHEMES and ADVANCED. Adjust the settings if you want to. In POWER SCHEMES section, the setting should be HOME/OFFICE DESK (that's for desktop computers). In SETTINGS FOR HOME/OFFICE DESK POWER SCHEMES section, reset SYSTEM STANDBY if you feel like it. Mine is set to 20 minutes (which means that after 20 minutes of inactivity, my system will take a nap, dozing off until I press the keyboard ENTER key to wake the fella up). In TURN OFF MONITOR, my setting is AFTER 15 MINUTES. It's AFTER 30 MINUTES for TURN OFF HARD DISKS.
When all these settings are done, click APPLY and you're done.
Leave your computer inactive for the number of minutes it takes SYSTEM STANDBY to take effect. When your monitor turns black, press the keyboard ENTER key, and you'll exit STANDBY mode and be back on your desktop again.

If you're manipulating the settings in the BIOS, you press the ESC key to exit a particular configuration menu. To exit the CMOS SETUP UTILITY, you save the settings by selecting SAVE & EXIT SETUP.
What are you referring to? To my knowledge, S3 is a BIOS setting in the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP of the CMOS SETUP UTILITY. S3 is the eqivalent of STANDBY mode. Are we talking about the same thing. I've always used the ESC key to navigate in and out of the different menus of the CMOS SETUP UTILITY. And it has never failed me! If you can't, something is wrong. Is yours an AWARD BIOS.
If you can't navigate the BIOS with the ESC key, I don't know of any other key to use. Perhaps someone else can help us with this.
