Boot problems are sometimes related to a weak/inadequate Power Supply, sometimes. What are the specs on yours ?

It did indeed take years to gather these links though

Read these and re-read them FULLY before preceeding.

you may have;
1. Hardware problems
2. Software version Problems
3. Software compatability Problems
4. Software installation Problems

It's a pain when a new format don't work correctly.
I have about 14 or so boxes at any one time, two are sitting for lack of an easy fix after running for extended periods.
A format and reinstall should have fixed one, it didn't. Just FYI, these things don't always obey the rules.

Too many things are happening in your life. You've got to stop to take stock of yourself. First thing to do is dump your quest for HIBERNATE. Come back to it later, after you've put your house in order.

Old Wise One Richard Cranium Jr must be short of breath right now, panting, blinking on the fast track. Wow! What a ride!!

Old Wise One Richard Cranium Jr, I salute you. The work you've done on behalf of the community is indisputably a first-rate class act. Me? I'm no where in your vicinity. You're a public servant supreme.

Windows 98 fascinates me. I'm constantly researching the OS. Never, never a dull moment. Did you know that when you're in HIBERNATE mode, the OS actually generates a HIBERNATE file. Why you might ask? Because when you shut down your computer, whether accidentally or deliberately, all the contents of ram are saved in the file. When you switch on your computer again, the file is processed and the contents just before the powering down are loaded as if nothing had happened. You start from where you left off. It's neat.

In Windows XP, for example, Hibernate.sys is the file that contains the contents of ram when you power down. In Windows 98, there are different flavors of known Hibernate files such as AMIZVSUS.PMF, SAVE2DISK.BIN, PM_HIBER.BIN, HI_BRN8.DAT, SAVETO.DSK and TOSHIBER.DAT.

XP1.8K, give us an account of all your current problems. Tell us what happens the moment you switch on your computer.

One thing at a time.

Let me see whether I've understood you correctly.

I assume that S3(STR) is off (that's STANDBY mode). It's not difficult to get it ON.

But what's this about ".....EXCEPT FOR THE MEMORY AND THINGS THAT I NEED TO TURN IT BACK ON ....". What's this MEMORY thing. And what's turning it back on and putting it into that mode.

S3(STR)
This is configured in the BIOS.

Start your computer, press DEL key. When you get into the CM0S SETUP UTILITY, select POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP and press ENTER.

In the POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP box, do the following:-

ACPI FUNCTION - ENABLED
ACPI SUSPEND TYPE - select S3(STR) by pressing on the UP or DOWN arrows.

Double check to make sure that all BIOS settings are correct.

When you're finished, save the settings and exit CMOS.

Re-install your OS one more time. Install the OS with this switch /p J, e.g.,

SETUP /p J

This will instruct the OS to re-install and also to ENABLE the ACPI function in the Registry. I don't think you should edit the Registry yourself. Might prove to be a "dangerous" exercise.

5-SECOND BEEP
If you've got an AWARD BIOS, the beep signifies a problem with ram. With Award BIOS, there are only two beep codes. One long beep followed by two short ones indicate a video card error. The BIOS has failed to initialize the video screen.

DISTORTED IMAGES
Generally, corrupted drivers do cause distorted images. Might not be a bad idea to upgrade your video card driver, or to re-install the existing one.

Another thing you ought to do is to run STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION, a process that initializes all critical start-up drivers one at a time. If the STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION runs fine, it would indicate that the drivers are all right.

If STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION hangs at the initialization of a particular driver, make a note of its name. It may be the one causing you some pain.

Here's how you can access STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION. Start your computer, press F8. When Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, select STEP-BY-STEP CONFIRMATION and run through the initialization process. See what happens.

I could be wrong (and it looks like I am), but I don't believe that Win98 ever supported hibernation at all. Is there anyone out there with Win98 that actually can hibernate? I thought hibernation started with WinME and Win2K.

Im my case, I could never get hibernation working until I got WinXP. I couldn't get hibernation working in any other windows version, and I tried them all.

I really wanted hibernation because I used to use OS/2 years ago (possibly even before Win95 was released, I dont remember). It had support for Hibernation, and I missed the feature when I moved on to Windows.

With Windows Me (S4/BIOS), Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the HIBERNATE feature is built into the OS and activated by it. Windows 98 does not have the feature built-in although it is supported. You'll find the HIBERNATE feature in Windows 98 only if manufactuers of the PCs support it and the system BIOS comes with the S4/BIOS setting (the equivalent of HIBERNATE). And there have been many systems using HIBERNATE with Windows 98.

In Windows 98, HIBERNATE files are created when the feature is enabled. Known files are AMIZVSUS.PMF, SAVE2DISK.BIN, PM_HIBER.BIN, HI_BRN8.DAT, SAVETO.DSK and TOSHIBER.DAT.

The FAT32 Drive Converter for Windows 98 specifically scans the hard disk for these HIBERNATE files when you want to convert a FAT16 hard disk to FAT32. If these files are found, the Drive Converter Wizard will stop the conversion and issue a message recommending non-conversion to FAT32.

When you run the FAT32 Drive Converter in Windows 98 with the switch /hib, the Wizard automatically removes HIBERNATE files. Apparently, converting a FAT16 drive, or a drive with any other file system, to FAT32 will impact on hard disk performance.

A HIBERNATE-enabled feature in Windows 98 will have different tabs in the POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PROPERTIES box. The ADVANCED tab is where you find and tune HIBERNATE.

Obviously even win95 can hibernate with the correct files. Toshiba at least puts the toshiber.??? file in systemroot, and when deleted puts a huge box in front of the user telling the computer won't hibernate because it's either missing that file or some txt files.

I don't find hibernate to be of any use.
My home computer starts fast enough, my life doesn't depend on the few seconds saved by those, nor the minute saved by 40x cdrw drive
My laptop enters standby mode whenever I close the lid, never ever has it hibernated.

okay.....nothing happened in the step by step conformation......okay, when i do the setup thing, do i put spaces anywhere??
sorta like this?

SETUP_/p_J?
or
setup/p_J?
or
setup_/pJ

which one is it? the underscores represent spaces......i don't wanna screw anything up.....i also don't wanna lose any of my files or programs.......so if i go into dos, and type the right setup above, will I lose any of my files? would i need to reinstall my drivers?
