question.?

I know this sounds like a question that everybody should know, but could someone explain to me what benchmarking exactly is? I was reading through the forum and it seems interesting.

Thanks,
Dragontech

Basically testing just how fast xyz really is in comparison to others.
If you were to test your PC for gaming purposes you would use something like 3dMark 2001SE (www.3dguru.com, or www.madonion.com I believe) and it will give you a score... depending on that score you could compare it to other machines to see how fast your machine is or how well things are tweaked.
For instance, if you took your machine with a Fresh install of win2k nothing added and got a score of 5000.. you then updated all of the drivers and did some tweaking and overclocking you could possibly raise your score up to 5500 or so.. just a way to track how well something is running in comparison to something else.

A simple answer is - Benchmarking shows performance.

A slow machine will have poorer benchmarks compared to a fast machine.

Benchmarks are also for different areas of processing, ie video , memory, arithmetic calculations, storage speed...

There are alot of programs availabe to do all of these tests. Some are considered the standard in testing.

Gamers are especially concered with FPS or frames per second.

My machine is fast enough for all the applications I use. I have never benched it really don't have a need to.

Benchmarking is measuring up how something compares to a set standard. For PCs, you can benchmark how fast your system does word processing or computation or how well it can display graphic images. You can go to www.madonion.com to get some benchmarking programs. They simulate a game running or someone doing intensive word processing, measure criteria and then compare it to a base system. The results are in some kind of score or frames-per-second count. You can then see how well or bad it does against a comparable system. Great to see if you want to tweak anything. Benchmark it again to see if you were able to make improvements. Have fun!

Thanks for all the replies.!!!
Another quick question. Using these programs to benchmark, do you have to figure out the tweaks on your own or are there somekind of tricks or manuals.

Thanks again,
Dragontech

Tweaking can mean anything. You can optimize your operating system, do hardware tweaking, do graphics card tweaking, internet connection tweaking, etc... browse through the different forums here and you'll get the idea.
