I need your opinion! 8~)

Ok fellow TechIMO buds, I value your opinion on this matter.
I purchased a 60gb IBM Deskstar a little while back and of course, it began it's famous "click of death" on me about 2 weeks ago. I was able to back up my files and replace it with a new drive. Today I was able to exchange it for another brand new 60gb IBM Deskstar. My current system runs on a 60gb Maxtor 7200 RPM drive and now I must make a decision, here are my choices:
1) Install the new 60gb IBM drive as a backup drive only.
2) Sell the IBM ASAP and buy another Maxtor!
3) *Insert Your Opinion Here*

I can't make up my mind on this matter, what do you think?
Thanks!

Mike

I am still using a 75GXP as a backup drive, and while a bit scary since my other one bit the dust, I ran the DFT on it and it says it's fine, and since it's a backup, I hardly use it. I figure if it starts to bite the big one, I'll have notice (I hope )

Either way, you have a new drive with a 3-year warranty, (or it's SUPPOSED to be new, check the MFG date) so it's your call

Myself, I'll never buy another IBM, but many still like them.

Yeah, I feel the same about the IBM drives Socal. Never again. Not after recent happenings. I said the same about Maxtor a while back when they were having problems with the 20GB drives failing. I use WD now. I actually traded 2 27GB Maxtors for 2 20GB WD drives of the same speed. (The 27GB drives had just come out and I didn't want to chance my setup on another possible failure aftrer losing several 20GB Maxtors). The guy I traded with thought I was nuts. I told him my reasoning and he was ok with it.

To me, that is a lot of drive to use for collecting dust as a backup, unless your data is irreplacable and you really need a backup. I would look into unloading the IBM, myself.

Like Socal said...your call.

Martoch - I'd also run the DFT on that new drive, too, to see if it's ok

Oh this is a brand spankin' new drive, so I could sell it as a new unused drive. I ran DFT on my old "clicker" and both the quick and advanced tests said my drive was fine. Sure it was, then why was it clicking like Big Ben? I have all of my valueable data on a partition of my Maxtor, so I'm not worried about that too much. I just think I would feel "better" about having another drive as a backup just in case I do put some home vids, pics, etc onto it. Hmmm...I think I'll order another Maxtor. I think I just needed to have a few folks agree with me about not liking IBM's too much to help me get rid of this thing. Thank you!

With the history of IBM Deathstars. I would let find a new home.
If you don't trust one now for your OS drive. Then why would you use it for a backup drive. I see a backup drive used for data you don't want to loose. If you can't trust it for the OS. I know I wouldn't trust it for backup.
Go with item #2
