Important: Yahoo Mail users must read

If you have a Yahoo Mail account then I think you should know that your account preferences have recently been modified. Don't believe it? Go to your Yahoo mail account.

-Click on options,
-then Account Information,
-now it'll ask you to input your password again,
-then it'll show your account information screen,
-in the middle of the page you should see a link that says Edit your marketing preferences. , click it.

Hey, look at that, it's a dozen or more questions that could easily be summed up in one single question "do I want to receive spam?" And how 'bout that, everything is marked "yes"!

At first I assumed that maybe those options were just automatically defaulting to 'yes' as the page generated for me since I had never been to the page before. And if I chose to back out of that page without submitting my answer to those questions then Yahoo should not have a 'yes' or a 'no' on file for me regarding those questions...right? Wrong.

It seems those 'yes' answers were not suggestions of how it wants me to answer the questions. No. Those were the recorded answers on file for my account. But I didn't answer all those questions with 'yes', who did?

Yahoo did, on my behalf. Wasn't that sweet of them? This "marketing preferences" section was just created a few days ago for all of Yahoo's users. But as not to bother us busy people with silly little questions Yahoo has been courteous enough to answer them for us.

Also on the "marketing preferences" page is a link to learn more about this scam, I mean option. Click on it and this is what you are told:

Quote:
What are marketing preferences and did Yahoo! change my preferences?

Yahoo! has grown and changed a great deal over the past few years. In order to keep you up to date about our many new products and services and how they might be of use to you, we have created a new Marketing Preferences page within the Account Information area. It is designed to make it easier for you to manage the marketing communications you receive from Yahoo! and ensure you get the latest relevant information to meet your needs.

In addition, we have reset marketing preferences for some of our users. If you are one of those users, unless you decide to change these preferences, you may begin receiving marketing messages from Yahoo! about ways to enhance your Yahoo! experience, including special offers and new features.

Yahoo! is notifying users of these changes to marketing preferences via email. Your new marketing preferences will not take effect until 60 days after the date the email is sent to you so you have plenty of time to decide what you want to receive and what you don't. To change your preferences, go to the Marketing Preferences page.

Please note that these new preference categories only relate to how Yahoo! communicates with you about Yahoo! products and services. Your Yahoo! Delivers preference, regarding special offers from our selected partners, remains as you selected it.
I hope I don't need to tell you this, but you should change all those answers to 'no' and then click 'save changes'. Fight the spam.

-uT

No, but you can get email for free. There's lots of places that have it.

Talk Thanks

Don't forget the two at the bottom, or they will flood your snail mail box and call you at wonderful hours (I just loved getting that telemarketing call at 7AM Friday, you would think that they knew something about time zones )

Also, here's something scary, look just below my username in the attached pic...

Not only that, but if you access your Yahoo email account with outlook express of any other 3rd party app, you will now have to pay for it, no longer free.

What is changing in the Yahoo! Mail POP/Forwarding service?
On March 20, 2002, Yahoo! introduced a low yearly subscription fee to:
Use Outlook, Eudora, or another POP3 client to access and manage your Yahoo! Mail.
Automatically forward your Yahoo! Mail to another email account -- even another Yahoo! address!
Send larger attachments, now up to 5MB instead of the free 1.5MB limit.
Send email without the Yahoo! promotional text at the bottom when sent through Yahoo!'s SMTP servers.

What is the yearly subscription fee for the Yahoo! Mail POP/Forwarding service?
Yahoo! Mail POP/Forwarding is available for a low yearly fee of $29.99. If you sign up before April 24, 2002, you will receive 33% off your first year -- $19.99. Your service will automatically renew at the then current rate
wow! save 10 bucks if you sign up before April 24! I'll get right on that.

Now if I read that right, the only thing they changed was spam concerning THEIR products and services. The preferences concerning 3rd party 'partners' reamins as you selected it when you signed up. Is this not right?
