I think Thud is right, with the high speeds of CDROMs it takes very little to get them out of balence.
I us a fine tip permanent marker (Staedtler Lumocolor 318)

Don't buy any cheapie sticker lables though... My experience from them is that when the CDROM media begins to heat up, it melts the adhensive layer and the edges peel of the label sticker where it gets stuck when you open the CDROM drive...

I personally bought a packet of TDK "CD-R Pens", they are basically like a very fine felt tip pen with permanemt ink, dry's instantly. Came in a pack of 4 (green, blue, red, black)

I am currently using the "dual sided" sharpy as well...come to think of it...it has lasted me an aweful long time too! I think I've had it over a year and must have burned at least 250-300 cd's...

Thoes rectangular lables make your cds/dvds really out of balance. the one time i rented a dvd from blockbuster they had thoes on there. i could HEAR a major difference in the noise.

I use a Sharpie myself. CD labels are too much of a hassle for me. I include the necessary information on a cover that I print and slip into my cheap envelopes (3 cents).

Typically sharpie is the way to go
However, for our wedding we gave music cd's to all of our guests of all of our wedding songs.. and we used the sticky labels on them
Worked pretty well too!
I've even used the cd in my car cd player (slot load of course) and no problems.
can't remember what software we used.
