scratched cds...

I have a scratched cd, my cd-rom will NOT read it but my cd-rw will, are there any programs out there that can extract what ever data is left on the cd?

why not try one of those cd repair tools I have used em before as long as it's the read side that's scratched and they are not too deep it normally will fix it. But if the label side (data) is scrateched you're probably outta luck

I would agree with az but as your cdrw can read it I would try to take the data off of it now and see how much you can get.

Try toothpaste.

Yep, not a typo this time, I said toothpaste! Apparently it is slightly abrasive, so helps clean off surface scratches. I tried it on a couple of my sons CD's that he scratched, and it worked well enough to let me copy the contents of the CD off.

Just make sure you rinse it off really well, and polish the CD dry with a clean soft cloth before putting it back in the player. I'm failrly sure it can't hurt the CD, so why not? It's free! If that doesn't work, buy one of the commercial cleaning kits and try that.
Cheers
Mick

Try CloneCD (easy to use and effective)... make an image of the cd to your harddrive then burn to another cd.

I am not sure about extraction, but you can buff the scratches out if they are on the bottom side of the cd. This area has protective plastic which can be buffed out. To do so, get a can of Brasso and buff it fromt he center-out, not round and round.

Good luck
Dave

With toothpaste, be careful. If you get the wrong kind, it will destroy the cd. Some is more abrasive than others. Especially ones with baking soda.

I have heard that car wax will work also. Just rub alittle bit into the scratch then buff it out.

I've used car polishing compound, and a gel that's used to takes out fine scratches in a car's finish (called NicSand). It's something like 10,000 grit sandpaper, but in gel form.
