Freezing Computer !

Computer has been freezing (not crashing) for several weeks now. Started at no particular time ie no changes were made to comp.

Remedy to get back to desktop etc is Ctrl-Alt-Delete and open task manager, then close. .All is then OK for 5 to 20 min and then freeze again.

It does this on W2k and WinXp.

I have tried all the usual- Start up with only video card and HDD.-
Replaced PSU-HDD-Video Card-CDroms Tested memory with Memcheck86 (Took hours) and all is OK. Tested HDD Deskstar 45Gig with prog from IBM site and says OK. Even bought a new MB (Abit) and still freezes.

Set up is-

Abit ST6 MB
Intel CPU 600 Coppermine
Video Asus 7100 64mb 400 MX( Driver 23.11)
Sound Blaster Live
Realtek Network card
PCI Modem -Hardware
OS -tried W2k and WinXP
Two CDROMS one is burner.

Even though it freezes, network still works, downloads still go, no data is lost.

Temp on CPU is steady on 50 c, a bit high I guess but not too bad., as it is hot here lately (30c). Usually round 40 on cool day.

Two other computers on network, one W2K the other Xp. No problems. Virtually the same programs too.

ANY ideas to try would be appreciated as this is the only prob I have ever had and been unable to work around or fix.

Driving me freezing crazie.!!!!!

Does task manager show anything not responding?
What programs are showing open in the task manager?

Task Manager does not show anything not responding. Usual progs that are being used are showing in Mgr, and all processes seem to be legit. Have scanned for virus, although I have formatted three times in last week, and also checked for trojan and addware. No errors show in event viewer either. Strange though that in XP I have to press close on task mgr TWICE to close it. It appeasr to be worse slightly when browsing, and I have tried Netscrape and Opera with no luck.

Thanks for quick reply.

Is anything taking up the CPU usage? I had a corrupted networking file that took all of the CPU usage....making it seem to freeze.

Nope, I have ECCP going, and with it turned off, CPU usage is minimal. Have been checking each time it freezes. Network has been going well, with no problems. Just noticed, (Must be getting old) that it requires two clicks to open task mgr when it freezes. Usually only one of course. Whether this has any bearing on the matter I just dunno!

Might want to take out youR RAM and see if a different stick of ram will help it. In the past week i've ran into 2 computers that have been freezing cause of bad ram. Some motherboards don't work well with some brands of memory and win2k and winxp seem to be more picky on the ram.

Thanks for all the replies.. I have reduced the RAM to 100 instead of 133, and today bought an extra fan as there is no internal fan. So, will see how it goes. ON reducing the RAM via bios there was no freezing for several hours until began browsing the net, then freeza again. Will also try another modem tomorrow and let you all know the results.

Thanks to all again..

Not as yet, although I removed two sticks of 128 and left one 128 Kingmax, and still freeze. Just booted up at noon with HDD and video card only, and still freezs. Seems to be mainly when using IE browser, but happens on IE5.5 and IE6,...??

Always have to press task mgr button TWICE to activate. Think I will drown my sorrows and start again onMonday.

But will get some diff RAM from spare comp and try before I start.

Thanks for comment. Much appreciate.
