Outdoors Erratic behavior with mouse

Here is my situation:

I am using a standard microsoft PS/2 mouse..
My operating system is Windows 2000. I have not used any other mice on this OS. (using the built in windows PS/2 driver)

I will be using my mouse.. and then all of a sudden the mouse cursor will jump erratically all over the screen.. after a few seconds.. it seems to return to normal.. (usually after i have pressed a few keyboard keys)

It will then work normally for a while until it does it's thing agian..

The erratic movement comes at the most random of times.. sometimes right when i boot into windows.. sometimes i can go several hours with no problems.. sometimes it happens every 15 minutes.. It has even happened after a fresh reformat and install of windows 2000.. this also happened on my previous install of windows98..

it is most annoying... how do I go about correcting this?

Run task manager and see if the resources are maxed when this occurs.

This is too weird. I just had a user with the same problem not more than 5 min ago. I got a little back ground on the situation from him. He has tried cleaning the wheels inside and I even took it apart to see if maybe there was some dirt between the light and wheel. Found nothing so I replaced it with a new one. Only cost a couple of bucks.

Try a different mouse, that one may have a broken wire causing intermittent problems.

Altho with optical its most likely the surface thats causing that kind of problem.

I had a very similar problem when I first got my computer. At times it would almost log me off!!

For me it was a bios update that fixed it. The documentation for the bios update even mentioned a fix for erratic mouse behaviour...

So you might see if there's an update for your bios and if so check for what changes/fixes are in it...

g'luck!

Edit-> But as suggested, trying a different mouse might be an easier and safer test to do first...

Kids Erratic Mouse

Does this erratic mouse behavior occur on a laptop? Please post additional info on the brand of computer & the hardware installed.

Yeah I have a laptop and the touchpad would behave like that. I think the touchpad works off heat, and if your hand is too warm it picks up the warmth of the other part of your hand and thinks thats where its moving to and gets confused. Thats my theory anyway.
