msPaint file association problem
HI There,
Im not in a hurry for a fix for this question as I only use msPaint for when I do screenshots.
My problem is that I no longer have the option to SaveAs and file format jpeg or jpg. The only options i have now are the bitmaps (bmp) or gif.
this gets a bit annoying as i prefer to save as jpg file format and msPaint no longer allows me this option.
Can someone tell me how to associate that file format to msPaint so I will have that option to save as now. The last few times i have submited screen shots here on techIMO have been gif's and i do not like gif format as it distorts the color and stuff to me.
TIA

You should be able to change / add file extension associations by going to View - Options - file types in an Windows Explorer window, selecting the appropriate file type (eg jpeg) then editing the open command and browsing to mspaint.exe as the program to perform action.
Easy, isn't it?
If you have any problems then post back here. You will of course lose the ability to open files with other programs (like internet explorer, for example).
These hints are for win9x. Can't recall how to change this in winXP, don't know how at all in win2K, but assume it's kind of simliar.

This box is win2kpro, I should have mentioned that. I looked at what you said but it didn't feel right so i didn't do anything, will look at it again later.
Can you give more um newbie like step by step instructions? I found options under the tools menu in explorer.
TIA

I use W2K pro also. I just ran a screen cap through paint.
Do you mean the option to save into other formats is missing from the drop down box at the bottom of the pop-up you get when you select Save As?

Hi I have uploaded a Pic to show you what I am referring to. I am refferring to the drop down section to save As file extension. CD You are correct in what I am trying to do.
How can I get the jpeg and jpg extensions back in there? If i open a exisiting jpeg or jpg in there it will leave me with option to continue to save in that format but with new msPaint files it will not allow me those options and only options i have to save in are the ones you can see in my pic I uploaded.

Here is what I found in Microsoft
Although it doesn't specifically state W2K it should work.
OFF2000: Some Office Graphics Filters Are Not Available in Microsoft Paint
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup), used with:
the operating system: Microsoft Windows 98
the operating system: Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
Although you installed all of the graphics filters with Office 2000, when you click the Save as type list in Microsoft Paint, you
may not see the following filters listed:
JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg,*.jpeg)
Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif)
CAUSE
You may not see these two filters listed if you have not started Microsoft Photo Editor, or if you have not opened any files of
these types in Paint.
RESOLUTION
To see these two filters in the Paint Save as type list, follow these steps. If you have not installed the necessary graphics
filters, first follow the steps in the "Install the Graphics Filters" section.
Save all of your work and quit Paint.
Start and then quit Photo Editor.
Start Paint.
Install the Graphics Filters
To install all of the graphics filters, follow these steps:
Start Office Setup.
Click Add or Remove Features .
In the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box, click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters .
Click the list next to Graphics Filters , and then click to select Run all from My Computer .
Click Update Now .

You need to have photo editor installed from the office suite to have that work. You may have to reboot before you see it.
