Just curios? Have you tried the defrag time in safemode vs normal?

Sounds like you task would be much simpler is you just let Windows load normal.

When you disable the virtual and then try and boot into windows you will get all kinds of errors about not enough mem to run the program. By booting into safe mode you do not run into the problem.

Can't you write it to load Windows but with minimal drivers and programs like when you run msconfig?

Would this work?

Instead of entering windows at all, enter your
"defrag.exe /all /noprompt"
as a line in your batch file. You are supposed to be able to run a windows program from the dos prompt. This could cause defrag to execute with a minimum windows shell.

Just a thought

are these computers on a network and do they have login prompt? because if they do you can have defrag run at boot time using the scheduler that win98 and some win95 systems have. By doing it at boot time when you have login prompt it will defrag before most of the programs load, most programs only load after you login.
