Systems Newbie PLZ Help with Networking

Hi all,

I just got a linksys BEFSR41 router recently and I tried following the instructions but I can't get neither one to connect to the internet or share files...back to square one. (Plz bear with me, I'm totally comp stupid)

I have a custom built comp upstairs running on WinXP and a Sony Vaio downstairs running on Win98. There were no instructions for XP and I tried everything "I" could...no luck.

Sorry for being so vague but I don't really know what info I need to post. If you need more info to help, plz ask.

This thing is stressing the crap out of me.
Any help is geatly appreciated
Thx

Can you access the linksys router's setup page from both computers?

Do you allow the computers to get the TCP/IP settings automatically? (this is the default, so yes unless you purposely changed it))

yes, I can access the seup page from both comps and I set everything on automatic...still no luck. The comp upstairs link to the internet(currently) has an Acer NIC and the Sony has a Linksys fastethernet NIC. Do I have to and is there a special way to set up networking on the comps, I just went through the wizard. Plz show me how to set everything up...Ihave no idea how to do it.

Thx

did you get cable? if so have you put in your host name and domain into the router? after that unplug the modem wait 60 seconds then plug it back in. next go back into the router and click the status page to see if you are getting a ip address

you should have something like this:
LAN:
(MAC Address: 11-30-78-g1-86-8k)
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP server: Enabled

WAN:
(MAC Address: 00-20-78-D1-86-7C)
IP Address: (should not be start with 192. or 172)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway: 68.10.108.1
DNS: 68.10.16.30
68.1.18.30
0.0.0.0
DHCP Remaining Time: 20:15:35

Also do you have file sharing installed and are they in the same workgroup?

for win98 go to control panel>click the network icon then identification tab.

for winxp right click my computer> click properties >network identifcation> then click properties.

if not change the workgroup name for both machines. reboot this is just to make it much easier for you. also with the win98 machine your pressing okay instead of cancel right?

( if the workgroups are the same, after you restart the modem restart both machines.) to share off stuff from the WINXP if you are using NTFS i believe you will have to enable the guest account. tell us what parition you used. hope this helps some

Well, I gave it another shot...failed again. Damn! If this thing doesn't work soon, it's gonna end up as a paper weight or somethin'. Anyways here's what I did for the comp upstairs with xp:

1. went in control panel/network connections
2. went in lan/high speed internet/local area connections
3. clicked on properties/selected internet protocol(tpc/ip)
4. obtained IP and DNS address automatically

5. Went into the setup page
6. typed MSHOME and mt.wh.phub.net.cable.rogers.com for host
name and domain

7. Typed in the info you supplied. (MAC and LAN address a different than you stated-cannot be changed...I think)
LAN - 00-04-5a-ec-bf-f9
WAN- 00-04-5a-ec-bf-fa

What should I put in as the WAN ip address and is the second DNS supposed to be 68.1 or 68.10?

Still no luck, please give me step-by-step help, I have no idea what I doing.

Sorry for the inconvinence but greatly appreciated.

Do you have Cable Modem or DSL?

If you have cable modem, chances are the Cable company
entered your specific MAC ID (from the computer they hooked up) into their database to identify you. If that is the case, you will have to get another NIC card to use in place of the one that was in that computer, and then enter the NIC id that they recorded into the Linksys router. That is probably preferable to trying to change you NIC ID with the cable company (some of them want to charge you extra to use a router.

you can also use ipconfig release_all and ipconfig renew to reset the ip address assigned to you by the DHCP server in the router.

Good luck

from the looks of it mt.wh.phub.net.cable.rogers.com your using cable (im a genious or what?) did they give you a specific computer name? seomthing that start as CX11111-a? if so you need to put that in as the host name.

you should not have to change anything for the LAN or WAN. i don't even think you can. down below on the setup page you should have an area that says WAN Connection Type: make sure that is set to obtain ip automatically

if you go into the status page and look at the WAN section does it give you a number? for example my ip is 68.10.110.74

after the change unplug the modem let it set for 60 seconds, and unplg the router. fire up the router then fire up the modem

and log back into the router

go into status and see if you get a ip in the wan section
