One of my friends is using WinDVD for playing back VCD movies. He said he had some problems playing it back with PowerDVD, can't tell you the details, however ...

VCD:
Windows media player 6.4.
SVCD:
Windows media player 6.4 along with any dvd software.

PowerDVD is nice.

ND:
Isn't windvd, powerdvd and some third program all based on the same core? They sure look the same

Don't know whether PowerDVD/WinDVD are based on same core, don't care, actually, but their controls are far better than those of WMP.
I prefer PowerDVD 4.0 XP for DVD playback, I like it's options better
As for VCD/SVCD playback - not much personal experience

for watching vcd's I used to use wmp. However there were a few vcd's that I could not get even windows explorer to see the disk let alone play it but after a year of thinking that these were dodgy disks got a player of a friend of mine, can't remember what it was called, but it played these vcd's perfectly for some reason. Not exactly sure what i'm getting at but I suppose use wmp as it is free with windows only if it doesn't work would I bother getting something else, unless of course I needed DVD software that is.

I use PowerDVD v3 for VCD playback with no probs to note. Actually, I use it or either PowerDivx Nextgen for all my video playback needs.
