Home networking woes

I've got a second computer connected to my Linksys BEFSR41 (cable access). It's a Compaq deskpro 4000 I dragged from the scrap heap at work. Running 98fe.

Internet access is fine but when I try to set up home networking, I'm getting a message that no NIC can be found. The network adapter listed is:
Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded UTP Controller

I've got IPX/SPX and TCP/IP installed. Any ideas?

John

list what you have done. No wizard in 98 that I know of.

OK, reinstalling the NIC drivers worked. I am able to run the networking wizard but now I'm getting a message that "System policies do not allow adding the selected device".

Any ideas here?

What are you trying to do? I'm sure doing it manually isn't hard, especialy if all you're trying to do is add it to the network. Windows wizard are crazy sometimes, and are a pain to try and troubleshoot as who knows what they're doing.

We'll get you through it

I'm trying to get this computer on my home network. But I just realized that when I try to enable file and printer sharing, it won't let me. It says, "System policies do not allow adding the selected device".

I cannot dee this device from my other computer and I can't see anything but the internet from the Compaq.

Is this something on the BIOS level? This computer was on a novell network at work but there's nothing left of novell.

make sure you have TCP/IP and IPX/SPX installed on the other machine also. i had that problem when i first got into networking. because i didn't have netbeui installed on both machines. it kinda makes a difference.

OK, I think I've nailed it down. I made sure both PCs have the same protocols and I had to disable Zone Alarm on both computers.

OK, now what do I do about Zone Alarm. My router is an NAT firewall but I've heard you should still use a software firewall.

Also, do I need NetBEUI? I've read this is also a security problem.

Really climbing the learning curve today!!

netbeui is a security problem. i wouldn't suggest using it. use ipx/spx its faster and more secure. i wouldn't worry if you have a NAT firewall. and zn (zone alarm) will cause problems for ya if you don't disable it. i know that from personal experience.

o yes, i almost forgot but thought i would mention it. if you have netbeui and ipx/spx running on the same network it can cause the network to be REALLY slow, or not function. that happened to a network i setup for my uncle. as soon as i removed netbeui it was running at the full 100mbps. just a thought.
