track internet usage

I want to keep track of how much downloading I do each month. My ISP allows me 8 gigs and I doon't want to go over my limit and pay extra. Any good programs out there for download?

First, let me say do you really expect to download 8 gigs of data in one month? Thats a lot of stuff to download! Outside of MS backoffice/small business server (and like programs) I don't know if there is a way to log downloadsize. You might try MS's website, or see if your ISP has download tracking available.

There are several out there... one is at http://www.geocities.com/magistone/magitime.htm

Do a search on "track Internet usage" at Google or Yahoo to find many more.

I haven't use any personally so I can't recommend any. Maybe some other members here can.

I would like to add, in ~146hrs straight I had downloaded ~2.5 gig over a 56k modem connection.

Is that 8Gb of TOTAL bandwidth usage, or 8Gb of files downloaded. I think my ISP goes by total bandwidth and we're limited to 20Gb on the cable modem.

Go to download.com and search fo DUmeter. It will track uploads, download, everything. It will log by day, week, omnth, and rolling 24 hours i believe. It's freeware too AFAIK.

interesting i've never heard of cable companies limiting their connections as far as data goes. AT&T Broadband (my ISP) limits me on really nothing at all, so i guess i gotta be grateful.

Traffic Charges

I can get how many KB I have used on my 56K analog account by using a "check account page" that my ISP provides. It shows log in times, port used, remote IP #, Kbytes sent, Kbytes received and time on line. All values are totalled at the bottom of the page to give: total Kbytes sent, total Kbytes received, and total hours on line for that month. Right now during a month of what, for me, is light usage I have received 640 Mega Bytes. If your IP is charging you for total amount of usage online, then you should be able to check your usage by checking your account page, the way you check your hour usage. That is if your IP provides this service.

I know that I have never come close to reaching my bandwidth limit, and that includes downloading things like Linux Mandrake (1.6Gb) and ELX (1.1Gb). I also do a lot of downloading on Morpheus, and surf about 6 hours a day on average.

The reason that they have the limit is so that someone doesn't hog more than their share of the bandwidth that is available (at least, that's what they told me).

I just found something else out too... my ISP no longer has a limit of one machine per account They just want you to bypass the router when they are troubleshooting a connection problem.
