Refilled Ink Cartridges
Parkgirl,
If your Lexmark uses ink cartridges with built-in print heads like a lot of the HP cartridges and some Canon, I have found your problem to be mainly with the electrical contacts. Some cartridges without print heads, like some Epsons and Canons, also have a chip with electrical contacts that can get dirty, causing the printer to not "see" the cartridge.
Cartridges with built-in print heads have a set of many electrical contacts that when dirty, do not allow the printer to recognize the cartridge. You must clean these contacts.
Manufacturers instructions usually instruct you to clean the contacts (both on the cartridge and the printer) with clean water and a soft rag. I usually use isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip, being careful to not leave any cotton from the Q-tip on the contacts.
As a last resort you can try cleaning the contacts with bleach. Clean with water or alcohol after cleaning with bleach.
