Magic Partition bad for disks over 500 gigs

I got Norton Magic partition 8 to upgrade from PowerQuest Magic Partition 8 that had a problem with my 750 gig hard disk. The only improvement is it will run under Windows XP.
If you set a partition active then you can't change or delete the partition. If you were running under Windows XP it won't actually set the partition active. the other partition will be ok. Now I have to send in the Replacement hard disk I just received yesterday unless I want to work around a partition that can't be set active and is too small for anything except the operating system. Can't set it active or delete it with disk manager either.

You will need to low level format it.
See your hard drives manufacture for details.
Never try to run any kind of partition without making sure the harddrive was totally defragmented.

Magic Partition won't work with 500 plus hard drives

I had no problems with disk manager. I stopped using Partition Magic. Later I'l get something that will work.

It's not something for the technically challenged, but gparted is a fantastic tool that I've yet to have trouble with. It basically does the same thing as partition magic (non-destructive partition table manipulation), but is open-source and based on Linux. I typically run it from a LiveCD.

I would second this COMPLETELY except for the "challenged" part... If you get the Ubuntu Live CD, it starts right up and is pretty easy for even a novice to use. Best of all, since you're running the CD, you have TOTAL access to the harddrive to do whatever you need to. I've used my live CD (actually, run off a USB key) to fix INNUMBERABLE partitions screwed up by XP and W7's bizarre partitioning schemes.

Don't be afraid... try it.
