Freezing Problem

This is weird: after a certain period of time where my mouse/keyboard is inactive, my computer freezes. At first I suspected that my screensaver was the problem, but I went into the screensaver properties and completely disabled the screensaver. The problem continues... if I don't shake the mouse every hour or so, the computer freezes and I have to do restart. Any suggestions?

check to see if you have "sleep" or "hibernation" enabled - that can cause problems.

Where would I find that?

I just edited the monitor power options:

The power scheme is "Home/Office Desk", I set it up to never turn the monitor/hard disks off when "plugged in" but to turn off after 5 minutes of running on battery. Same settings for the system standby. Hibernate is completely disabled.

hello swartzism. my pc just started doing the same thing roughly 1 month ago. have you re-installed your OS again? the reason why i ask is because i re-installed my OS a second time around and before i performed that, i backed up my previous files during re-install so that i would not have to re-install my applications, games, etc. and just move all of my folders after the fresh re-install. anyway, after the 2nd re-install the freeze-up after a while started. i think my back-up files from my previous install is causing this problem. just a thought to your question.

The problem with mine was with nvidia overclock settings. I had specific settings for the computer to start overclocking when certain games started up and that was causing the computer to freeze up when the CPU was inactive. Check your graphics performance settings, make sure they are all stock settings.

good point swartzism. my nvidia overclocking and each saved profile for each specific game is activated manually in the beginning. however, i do not revert back to default after i am done playing. i will attempt to remember to do that going forward. i hope that helps.

what's crazy though is that i could leave the overclocking as is and never had the hybernating state..even though that feature was off in my last OS re-install. hmmmm...
