Problem in system ini File??

Hi! it's been a while since I've been on here!
I started the computer up, after it had finished loading everything it all of a sudden lockedup, cursor wouldn't move, no ctrl-alt-del, no numlock, nothing.
Okaay... Re-boot, exact same, re-r-eboot.... same, re-re-re-boot....same, etc
Figured I didn't need to use the computer right then and came back the next day. same, started it up in safe mode. no problems, disabled almost everything in the startup list, rebooted in normal mode locked up again! I had to get the computer to at least limp along that day, so I used the other hard drive I had hooked up , set it as c: installed windows on that and thats what I'm using now.
I'd be content if I could find all of the discs for the drivers, corel, and other programs, but I can't find them! (I know, I know "put them in a safe place" I did, safe from me) So I tried to fix the other hard drive, I found a page on microsoft that was the exact problem I was having, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q188867/ I printed it off, switched hard drives, and followed instructions,
It said to try one of the three boot modes, Boot mode A, was to disenable the win.ini and system.ini in msconfig, I did that, rebooted to normal mode and lo and behold it worked!, I read further in the instructions, it said to clear the boxes in the win.ini folder under windows labeled load= and run=. I did that and rebooted anticipating that it would be working just fi,,,,,,,, it locked up again!
I tried restoring a backup of the registry nothing. I went through the win.ini folder with everything turned off, still locked up. I then tried to elimenate one by one in the system.ini , I got all that I could unchecked so I would assume that it's one of the remaining "boxes"
but I can't uncheck anymore 'cause windows will re check them when it starts up
everything in the [boot] folder
[power.drv]
[drivers] - wave=mmsystem.dll
mdi=mmsystem.dll
[iccvid.drv]
mciseq]
[vcache]
[password list] one of either option
[msnp32]
I felt the windows help page took me so far and left me hanging on the brink of a solution. but what else is new.
I'm so close, but I lack the knowledge to proceed, Help me please!
win98se (yeah I know this computer is on the outdated side)
AMD 1400+
256MB ram
2 80GB wdhard drives
nvidea geforce 2mx400
liteon dvd burner
I hope I've given enough info!
Thanks!

Fuzzilla01 is infamous around these parts
I have a dual-boot XP/98se but I' have dust all over 98SE so bear with me.

"[password list] one of either option"

Hmmm, there should be only one. Search for & backup any .PWL file to a .ZIP/.RAR/.ACE file or rename then adding .OLD as the extension & try rebooting. Corrupt .PWL's cause many wierd problems.

Have a Autoexec.bat or Config.sys in the root? Unless you have dos apps you don't need them, rename them one at a time with the .OLD extension & reboot.

Is Win98SE fully patched with critical patches? Tell the truth.

That failing it could be almost anything. You could try removing/scrubbing/reinstalling drivers starting with video. If you've been running for two years you may have OS decay, the natural decay of files from being lifted & rewritten from/to the drive. In this case your best bet is to wipe the drive (backup all your stuff first) & do a full install. Reinstalls over old OS'es generally cause more problems than they fix.

HTH
