I am very glad, flipper, that you have mentioned the cost of new programs, missed by many.

Thats why I won't even consider buying a system from a place that only offers Vista. They must be idiots not to see how foolish this is. I'd definitely recommend going back to XP if possible.

I had some problems with Vista at first but after I worked out "most" of the bugs (still a few issues) it runs very good.

Just ask yourself this - if Vista is so good, why is it that none of the major computer dealers,DELL,HP,ect.,use it on their own business network systems?Sure, they'll put it on the systems they sell to consumers to stay in Microsoft's good graces, but you won't find it on their own machines any time soon.

I can't remember how long did it take XP Pro to reach SP 2 after its initial release?

So I'd expect going from 32 to 64 bit will take longer to get drivers and bugs corrected.

I'm going to have a new rig built in next 6-12 months I'm saving up for it first but, since I'm going more high end it makes me wonder if it wouldn't be smarter to go Vista Ultimate 64 bit vs XP Pro.

If I do decide to go Vista Ultimate route my plan is wait til I notice NLE builders start using Vista on their workstations to know its safe to forge ahead on my rig.

Well,SP2 came out about a year and a half ago, pretty late in XP's run.Since I'm planning to order my system in late July,I'm going with XP Pro.64 bit hasn't caught on nearly as fast as expected, hardly any games or applications seem to take advantage of it,and Windows 64 version of Pro wasn't that successful because of bad driver support.Maybe by the time I'm ready to upgrade they'll finally get Vista and 64 bit right.

Vista has been pretty disappointing. I think people were actually HAPPY with the way XP was going after SP2.

I guess in a year or two when everyone is on Vista we'll have different opinions...right in time for Windows 2010. I'm calling it WindowsX, you heard it here first
